Coffee is one of the most popular drinks, loved by many people, they can even drink coffee every day. After drinking coffee, users will feel increased energy, improved mood, become happy, excited, alert, reduce fatigue. However, some people feel itchy throat after drinking coffee.

People with gastroesophageal reflux are prone to sore throats after drinking coffee.

Caffeine

The caffeine in coffee is a diuretic, increasing urine production. Several studies have suggested that the water content of a coffee drink can counteract the diuretic effect of regular caffeine.

"In people who are not used to caffeine, drinking a lot of caffeine at once can increase urine output, which can dehydrate the body, causing irritation and eventually pain in the throat. Consider abstaining or choosing a coffee with a lower caffeine content," Dr. Vu shared.

People with gastroesophageal reflux

People with gastroesophageal reflux when drinking coffee, the caffeine in coffee is acidic and can increase acid production in the stomach, causing irritation, leading to reflux of gastric juice into the esophagus, causing irritation of the throat mucosa and causing an itchy throat after drinking.

If you experience this condition frequently, you should limit your coffee intake or drink less acidic coffee, and avoid drinking coffee in the evening or before going to bed. If the sore throat persists, you should consult your doctor for evaluation and treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Health status

When the body is suffering from sore throat, sinusitis, or spring allergies, etc., it can make the throat easily irritated and cause an itchy or uncomfortable feeling after drinking coffee.

Allergy

Some people may be allergic to ingredients in coffee such as quality, flavoring, or allergic to caffeine in coffee, which can cause an itchy, uncomfortable feeling in the throat after drinking coffee, but this condition is not common.

Caffeine allergy is different from caffeine side effects like jitters or headaches and does not cause difficulty breathing. Choose quality coffee, or avoid drinking coffee if you are allergic to caffeine.

For people who are not allergic to coffee, drinking coffee in moderation can provide health benefits.
