The Pakistani government is facing widespread criticism on social media after sharing a video on X with the title "Pakistan shoots down Indian fighter jet". However, it is actually a cutscene from the game Arma 3 .
More significantly, according to the UK Defense Journal, the official X account of the Pakistani government posted this video. The clip was even shared with a statement from Pakistan's Information Minister Attaullah Tarar praising the country's Armed Forces for their "timely and intense response."
“This is a government account using fake videos from games,” X’s community fake news checker also notes right below the post.
Arma 3 , released in 2013, is a first-person shooter with realistic style and beautiful graphics. In the game, players play as Corporal Ben Karry on a journey to join the main NATO force to respond to the Altis armed forces in the Mediterranean. Although only rated 7/10 points by Gamespot, Arma 3 is still supported by many players thanks to its realistic simulation style.
PIB Fact Check , a news site that specializes in scams, also warned that many other videos circulating about the India-Pakistan conflict are not real.
Specifically, another video purportedly showing the Rafael jet being shot down was actually from a 2021 MiG-21 crash in Punjab. Meanwhile, another widely circulated clip claiming an Indian jet was shot down near Budgam was traced by the PIB to a 2019 Mi-17 V5 helicopter crash.
The conflict between New Delhi and Islamabad broke out after on the morning of May 7, India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting nine targets that it called "terrorist infrastructure" in Pakistani territory and the Islamabad-controlled area in the disputed Kashmir region.
India said the move was in response to a shooting that killed 26 people near the town of Pahalgam on April 22. India had previously accused Pakistan of supporting the militants who carried out the attack, a charge Pakistan denied.
