According to Reuters, on May 28, the New Glenn rocket of Blue Origin – the aerospace company of American billionaire Jeff Bezos – exploded while on the launch pad at Cape Canaveral, Florida (USA).

"We experienced an unusual incident during today's hot-fire test," the company wrote in a brief statement on social media, while also confirming that "all personnel have been confirmed safe."

Static firing tests involve operating the engine while the rocket remains anchored to the ground to test the system before launch.

Videos circulating online show the missile emitting smoke from below before exploding into a massive fireball, creating a large column of fire and smoke that engulfed the launch site.

According to American media, the New Glenn rocket is approximately 98 meters tall, equivalent to a 30-story building.

Billionaire Jeff Bezos later stated that the company had begun investigating the cause of the explosion.

"It's still too early to know the root cause, but we've started to investigate. Today is a very bad day, but we will rebuild what needs to be rebuilt and get back on the flights. It's worth it," he wrote on X.

In particular, this incident marks another setback for Blue Origin in its competition with Elon Musk's SpaceX.

The New Glenn rocket is seen as central to Blue Origin's space ambitions to compete in the large payload rocket segment.

Developed over approximately 10 years at a cost of billions of dollars, New Glenn is the first reusable booster-stage rocket designed to compete with SpaceX's Falcon and Starship lines.

Following the incident involving his counterpart, Elon Musk responded briefly under the video of the explosion: "Making rockets is very difficult," and called the accident "extremely regrettable."

Meanwhile, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) also announced that it was aware of the incident, but stated that it was outside its jurisdiction and did not affect air traffic in the area.
