According to Dr Basavaraj S Kumbar, Consultant - Internal Medicine, Aster Whitefield Hospital (Bengaluru, India), cellulitis is a common bacterial skin infection that causes redness, swelling, heat and pain in the affected area.
“This condition usually occurs when bacteria enter the skin through a wound, scratch, or other break in the skin,” says Dr. Kumbar. “In some cases, cellulitis can spread to deeper tissues and even the bloodstream, causing serious complications.”
The main types of cellulitis are facial cellulitis, periorbital cellulitis, and breast cellulitis. There are also diabetic foot cellulitis and necrotizing fasciitis.
Can cellulitis affect the eyes?
Periorbital cellulitis involves the eyelids and the area around the eye, causing eye pain, vision loss, and other permanent damage if not treated properly, Dr. Kumbar adds.
Common symptoms of cellulitis that occurs in the eye include:
- Edema, swollen eyelids.
- Can't open eyes completely.
- Red rash around the eye socket.
- Fever.
How to diagnose the condition
To diagnose cellulitis, your doctor will examine the affected area and may order blood tests or scans to rule out other conditions.
“Treatment usually includes antibiotics to fight the infection. In severe cases, hospitalization and intravenous antibiotics may be necessary. Keeping the affected area clean and elevated can help reduce symptoms,” says Dr. Kumbar.
