Vietnam has its third female mathematics professor.

Ms. Ta Thi Hoai An, 51 years old, from Nghe An , is the third woman to achieve the title of Professor of Mathematics in Vietnam in nearly 70 years.

On November 6, the State Council of Professors announced a list of 588 candidates recognized as meeting the standards of professors and associate professors (excluding candidates in the fields of Security and Military ). Of which, the field of Mathematics has two people meeting the standards of professors: Ms. Ta Thi Hoai An and Mr. Doan Thai Son, both working at the Institute of Mathematics - Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.

Ms. Ta Thi Hoai An, 51 years old, from Nghe An, became the third female professor of Mathematics in Vietnam, after Professor Hoang Xuan Sinh (recognized in 1980) and Professor Le Thi Thanh Nhan (in 2015).

The first professorship in Vietnam took place in November 1956, 67 years ago. At that time, the Mathematics department had two professors, Ta Quang Buu and Le Van Thiem.

Ms. Hoai An graduated from Vinh University in 1993 and defended her doctorate in 2001 under the guidance of Professor Dr. Ha Huy Khoi - former Director of the Institute of Mathematics. During this period, she was a lecturer at Vinh University.

From 2001 to 2004, she was a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Mathematics, Taiwan Academy of Sciences , under the auspices of Professor Julie Wang. After that, Ms. An returned to teach at Vinh University.

Since 2005, she has been working at the Institute of Mathematics, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology. She was recognized as an associate professor, won the Institute of Mathematics award and a scholarship for excellent research from the Humboldt Foundation (Germany) in 2009. In 2015, Ms. An received her PhD in Science from the University of Clermont Ferrand 2 Blaise Pascal (France).

Ms. An's main research directions include: Nevanlinna theory and applications, degeneracy of analytic mappings, and problems on Diophant approximation.

She has guided three doctoral students to successfully defend their theses, completed four ministerial-level scientific research projects, published 33 scientific articles in prestigious international journals, and published two books on Mathematics.
