Vietnam contributes to AZEC towards zero-emission Asia

On August 21, the 2nd Ministerial Meeting of the Asian Zero Emission Community (AZEC) took place in Jakarta. A number of ministers and representatives from 11 AZEC member countries, including Vietnam, attended the meeting. The meeting aimed to discuss the efforts of countries in pursuing net zero emissions targets, encourage the participation of business units in decarbonization efforts, and organize a business networking forum to enhance future cooperation. In his opening speech, Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto emphasized that AZEC is a meeting forum for government organizations, industry leaders and experts to discuss and affirm the important role of renewable energy and sustainable activities in all sectors around the world. The Minister said that 34 Indonesian energy transition projects have been submitted to AZEC in 2024 to receive funding from Japan. (Photo: Do Quyen/VNA) Meanwhile, the Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry said that AZEC's strength is the partnership between the public and private sectors. To date, 350 decarbonization projects and 100 Memorandums of Understanding have been implemented in the region. During the conference, 70 new Memorandums of Understanding were signed. The conference also achieved many important results, including the second AZEC Ministerial Joint Statement, the announcement of the Memorandum of Understanding for the new AZEC project, and the organization of the AZEC Business Forum. In particular, the launch of the Asia Zero Emission Center on this occasion is of great significance in encouraging the participation of business units in decarbonization efforts as well as a business networking forum to enhance future cooperation. The Asia Zero Emission Center is located at the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) in Jakarta as a platform to support AZEC partner countries in developing their visions, roadmaps, and policies. Mr. Hiroki Sekine - Managing Director, Head of Global Infrastructure and Environment Finance Group, Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), said that many private companies do not have enough financial capacity or access to financial resources from the government . Therefore, this forum provides diverse financial access to create results of cooperation. In the coming time, Japanese enterprises and AZEC countries will work with the Vietnamese government and partners to implement the projects. The Asian Net Zero Emission Community is part of the emission reduction initiative, first initiated by the Japanese Prime Minister at the 26th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) in Glasgow and officially launched at the Group of 20 (G20) Summit in Bali in 2022. AZEC member countries include Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Brunei and Australia.
