Ambassador Do Hung Viet, Head of the Permanent Delegation of Vietnam to the United Nations, spoke at the Discussion Session.

The UN Deputy Secretaries-General in charge of peacekeeping and political affairs, along with representatives of more than 70 countries, spoke at the discussion session, all affirming that UN peacekeeping and peacebuilding activities are essential tools to support conflict resolution, promote political processes and protect civilians.

Most delegates assessed that UN peacekeeping operations are facing many challenges, from a complex security and geopolitical environment, limited financial resources, to increasing threats to the safety of peacekeeping forces.

Speaking at the meeting, Ambassador Do Hung Viet, Head of the Permanent Delegation of Vietnam to the United Nations, emphasized that peacekeeping activities are one of the most concrete and clearest examples of multilateralism, but need to be adjusted and adapted more effectively to the new international context.

On that basis, the Head of the Vietnamese Delegation proposed 4 groups of solutions that need to be prioritized for implementation in the coming time.

Firstly, peacekeeping operations need to pay special attention to protecting civilians, especially women and children, and consider it a central task, so that missions can truly become a support for the host community.

Second, the United Nations and its missions need to further strengthen mediation efforts, promote preventive diplomacy and build on the Secretary-General’s initiatives to help resolve conflicts at their roots, rather than just stopping at crisis management.

Third, member countries need to fully and timely fulfill their financial obligations, linking commitments with concrete actions.

Fourth, the United Nations needs to strengthen the review and drawing of experiences from activities over the past decades, including peacekeeping and post-conflict peacebuilding, as a basis for flexible application in the implementation of tasks in new circumstances.

Ambassador Do Hung Viet affirmed that, after more than a decade of direct participation in UN peacekeeping activities, Vietnam has always believed that multilateralism is a solid path to achieving and maintaining sustainable international peace. Vietnam will continue to accompany its partners for the goal of maintaining global peace and security./.
