Trang An Eco-tourism Area is an eco-tourism area located in the Trang An World Heritage Complex (in Ninh Binh province). This place has been ranked as a particularly important national monument by the Vietnamese Government and recognized by UNESCO as a dual world heritage since 2014. The Trang An - Tam Coc - Bich Dong scenic complex - Hoa Lu ancient capital - Hoa Lu special-use forest is currently planned together in the Trang An Scenic Complex, becoming the first dual world heritage in Vietnam with outstanding values in terms of natural landscape, cultural history and geological formation and is also a place invested in to become an international-class tourist area.
Sharing at the Forum "Developing Green Destinations, Elevating Vietnam Tourism" held recently, many experts said that, in the context of the world facing serious challenges such as climate change, natural resource depletion and increasingly obvious consequences from mass tourism, the concept of "green tourism" is not simply a timely choice, but has become a mandatory requirement for the tourism industry to survive and develop sustainably. Therefore, according to Ms. Hoang Thuy Huong - Market Development Director, Trang An Ecotourism Management Board, in addition to the above highlights, Trang An also has a very unique value. This place is the "cradle" of evolution of ancient Trang An people; the first people to approach and exploit the sea in Vietnam; create limestone tools, maintain industry, chisel, make pottery and cultivate in swampy valleys.

In addition, with its stunning natural beauty, limestone mountains, 48 water caves, 31 valleys and 50 dry caves, combined with a rich local culture and long history. In addition, this place is also considered an outdoor geological museum, with its terrain surrounded by limestone mountain ranges in the middle of a flooded lowland - this is an excellent and outstanding model on a global scale.
In Vietnam, in recent years, green tourism - sustainable tourism is being prioritized by many tourism businesses, especially in heritage and spiritual cultural areas. Affirming the goal of not trading heritage values, not expanding infrastructure into core areas, not chasing quantity and sacrificing the environment for revenue, Ms. Hoang Thuy Huong said that Trang An eco-tourism area determines the development direction according to 5 models: urban space associated with the conservation of natural landscapes, cultural heritage and historical identity of the locality; cultural industry leading future development; sustainable indigenous heritage tourism; residential land, agricultural land and forestry model coexisting with traditional livelihoods and sustainable conservation of World Heritage with distinct Asian characteristics.
Developing sustainable tourism, Trang An follows the direction of not concreting the core heritage area; not using engines, all boatmen take tourists to explore and are local workers; not interfering with hydrology and pristine landscape. This approach makes Trang An one of the most attractive tourist areas in Vietnam.
As evidence for this, Ms. Hoang Thuy Huong said that Trang An's way of doing green tourism follows the principle of "Preservation - promotion - sustainability". This is demonstrated through outstanding results such as: destinations in the Trang An scenic complex always account for over 80% of the total number of visitors to Ninh Binh; nearly 100% of the boat rowing and operating force comes from local people; reducing 60% of waste.
Not only that, for sustainable tourism development, Trang An cannot lack festivals and outdoor activities to attract tourists such as: the Tet heritage festival; Long Sang painting activities... Besides, sustainable tourism development also requires traffic management, waste management and "heritage storytellers", creating a space to encourage tourists to be responsible for "keeping the heritage green, clean and proud..."
