Developing digital technology in conjunction with sustainable green transformation is the dual strategy chosen by Viettel IDC. This strategy is expected to completely change how the business operates in the future.
Recently, in its report "The World Economic Situation and Outlook 2024," the United Nations presented a bleak forecast for the global economy in 2024, citing escalating conflicts, weak global trade, high interest rates, and increasing climate disasters. This context presents numerous challenges for businesses in formulating policies to ensure continued growth while pursuing sustainable development. The 2008 financial crisis led to the collapse of Lehman Brothers – the 158-year-old largest bank in the United States – along with many other major financial empires worldwide. Conversely, many corporations and businesses have weathered this recession and survived to this day, becoming global technology giants in various fields such as Accenture, Microsoft, SAP, Cisco, Salesforce, LG, etc. The common thread among these businesses is that they recognized and seized opportunities during difficult times by proactively responding with ESG strategies (a set of standards that assess three aspects: environmental, social, and corporate governance). ESG is considered a game-changer for businesses by operating in a more responsible, transparent, and environmentally friendly manner based on clear principles and standards. According to a report by the marketing consulting firm Edelman (USA), up to 88% of investors worldwide believe in generating good returns from companies that focus on ESG initiatives. In 2022, 56% of businesses in the Asia- Pacific (APAC) region successfully applied ESG to their investment plans. In Vietnam, the stock market currently has over 1,700 companies on the three major exchanges (HoSE, HNX, UPCoM), but only about 7 of the top-capitalization companies fully implement ESG reporting across all three aspects. To share global sustainable development trends and best practices in Vietnam, Viettel IDC is organizing the Green Tech for Green Future workshop, featuring representatives from the sustainable development strategy consulting firm PwC, and domestic and international organizations and businesses to exchange and share new perspectives on sustainable development for the business community.Representatives from PwC shared insights on global trends in the application of sustainable development.
The data center industry in Vietnam is increasingly demonstrating its role in the economy with strong revenue growth and job creation for local workers. However, with the projected size of data centers in Vietnam reaching US$1,266 million by 2030, an average compound annual growth rate of 10.8%, this market also faces many challenges that need to be addressed, such as electricity and water consumption, carbon emissions, waste treatment, and human resources issues, in order to ensure sustainable development goals. At the conference, Viettel IDC shared its sustainable development report covering all three ESG aspects and committed to taking actions towards sustainable development goals over the next 15 years. Viettel pledged that its action plan will be closely linked to sustainable development goals and Vietnam's commitments at COP26, including increasing electricity and water saving rates. 100% of our data centers and cloud services meet international standards and regulations in Vietnam; we aim for 100% of our data centers to utilize renewable energy, accounting for over 30% of total electricity consumption; contributing to the development and enhancement of the capabilities of over 1 million digital technology professionals in Vietnam and the markets where Viettel IDC invests… Mr. Hoang Van Ngoc, CEO of Viettel IDC, stated: "As a market leader in data center and cloud computing services in Vietnam, Viettel IDC aims for business development that is always accompanied by sustainability. We not only share our commitments to ensuring the dual goals of digital technology development coupled with sustainable green transformation, but we also hope that the Vietnamese business community will join us and choose appropriate ESG applications to create a sustainable value chain."Representatives from PwC shared insights on global trends in the application of sustainable development.
