Gyokeres is reportedly close to reaching an agreement with Arsenal. |
Sporting Lisbon's star striker, who scored 52 goals in all competitions last season, has been on the radar of numerous European giants such as Arsenal, Manchester United, Juventus, and even Liverpool since the beginning of the summer transfer window.
According to the latest revelations from L'Equipe , Gyokeres has chosen Arsenal as his next destination. Arsenal's new Sporting Director, Andrea Berta, is directly leading the negotiations, while Gyokeres' representatives have expressed their desire to move to Emirates Stadium. His agent, Hasan Cetinkaya, is reportedly finalizing the contract with Arsenal.
However, the crucial issue remains the negotiations between Arsenal and Sporting Lisbon. President Frederico Varandas recently reaffirmed to the newspaper O Jogo that no team has yet met Sporting's asking price for Gyokeres.
Varandas even accused Gyokeres' representatives of trying to pressure and "blackmail" Sporting into releasing him for a price lower than the agreement reached last summer, when both sides agreed that he would leave for 60 million euros plus 10 million in add-ons.
Gyokeres is seen as the solution to the striker problem that manager Mikel Arteta has been struggling with for the second half of last season. Gabriel Jesus' serious ligament injury, along with Kai Havertz's fitness issues, forced Arteta to rotate his attack with players who are not pure center forwards, such as Mikel Merino, Leandro Trossard, and Raheem Sterling.
Unless something changes, Arsenal will end their drought of a top-class number 9 with the player who scored goals like a machine in Portugal. Viktor Gyokeres could then become the most important piece in their ambition to overthrow Man City next season.
