In April 2025, the Vietnam Maritime Corporation ( VIMC ) officially celebrated its 30th anniversary. Having weathered challenging times, from the global financial crisis to a bold restructuring process , VIMC has steadily risen, once again affirming its position in the maritime and logistics industry. On May 10th, at the National Convention Center, VIMC will hold a ceremony to celebrate its 30th anniversary and receive the Second Class Labor Medal, marking its brilliant achievements and the beginning of a new, breakthrough journey.
A 30-year journey: overcoming challenges.
Over three decades, VIMC has inevitably experienced periods of ups and downs. In the late 2000s, despite reaching its peak in terms of fleet size, the Corporation unexpectedly faced a crisis following the 2008 global economic recession. General Director Nguyen Canh Tinh shared: “When the market collapsed, the 2008 financial crisis and economic recession devastated everything. Freight rates plummeted, and the entire fleet that VIMC had just invested heavily in, with a total tonnage of over 3 million DWT, suddenly became a huge burden. Having to take over loss-making businesses from the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation was like a chain reaction of blows. Revenue was insufficient to cover expenses, and all our reserves were depleted.”
Step by step, VIMC implemented a comprehensive restructuring. With a spirit of "courage and resilience," the staff changed the management strategy while simultaneously carrying out equitization and financial restructuring, helping the enterprise gradually recover.

Overcoming the crisis, VIMC not only recovered but also grew strongly. To date, the corporation has achieved positive equity of over VND 17,000 billion, ranking among the top 10 state-owned corporations with the best ROE and ROA ratios. This success stems from its strategy of focusing on three main pillars: maritime transport, port operations, and logistics services. VIMC's port system comprises more than 16 major ports, accounting for approximately 30% of the country's total port throughput. In addition, its logistics centers in Hai Phong, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City not only effectively serve the domestic market but also expand connections with global supply chains.
VIMC's growth is also reflected in its international stature, as many multinational corporations such as Maersk, MSC, and CMA-CGM… have proactively sought cooperation and signed agreements, opening up many positive business prospects. These strategic agreements with major players clearly demonstrate the company's prestige and competitiveness on the international stage.
Looking towards a brighter future and international integration.
Entering its next phase of development, VIMC aims for continuous innovation and sustainability. The corporation prioritizes the application of high technology in port management and logistics: process automation, platform digitalization, and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to optimize the supply chain. In particular, green transportation solutions and fleet upgrades are being strongly implemented to reduce emissions and improve business efficiency.

Alongside technological innovation, VIMC is accelerating its global expansion strategy. Under the leadership of Chairman Le Anh Son and General Director Nguyen Canh Tinh, the corporation is investing in deep-water ports, anticipating the shifting trends in the global maritime industry. Projects such as the Can Gio International Transshipment Port are being promoted, contributing to enhancing Vietnam's position on the regional maritime map.
Looking back over the past 30 years, VIMC has affirmed its role as a solid pillar of Vietnam's maritime industry, making many important contributions to socio-economic development. The upcoming 30th anniversary celebration and the awarding of the Second Class Labor Medal on May 10th is a well-deserved recognition of these achievements.
As General Director Nguyen Canh Tinh shared: "We are like sailors, unable to change the direction of the wind, but able to adjust the sails." With clear belief and strategy, VIMC enters its 30th year with many great goals and ambitions to conquer.
