VIMC: From challenges to achievements - Vietnam National Shipping Lines - VIMC

Việt NamViệt Nam08/05/2025

In April 2025, Vietnam National Shipping Lines ( VIMC ) officially marked the 30th anniversary of its establishment and development. Having gone through a challenging period from the global financial crisis to the bold restructuring process , VIMC has steadily risen , once again affirming its position in the maritime and logistics industry. On May 10, at the National Convention Center, VIMC will hold a ceremony to celebrate its 30th anniversary and receive the Second Class Labor Medal, marking its brilliant achievements and starting a new journey of breakthroughs.

30 years journey: overcoming the waves

Over the past three decades, VIMC has not been immune to ups and downs. In the late 2000s, despite reaching the peak of its fleet, the Corporation suddenly faced a crisis after the 2008 global economic recession. General Director Nguyen Canh Tinh shared: “When the market collapsed, the financial crisis and economic recession of 2008 destroyed everything. At that time, shipping rates fell freely, and all the fleet that VIMC had just invested in with a total capacity of more than 3 million DWT suddenly became a huge burden. Having to take over more loss-making businesses from the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation was like a series of blows. Revenue was not enough to cover expenses, and all the reserve resources at that time were exhausted.”

Step by step, VIMC has carried out a comprehensive restructuring. The staff with the spirit of “courage and resilience” has changed the management strategy, simultaneously implementing equitization and financial restructuring, helping the enterprise gradually recover.

Overcoming the crisis, VIMC not only recovered but also grew strongly. To date, the corporation has achieved positive equity of more than VND 17,000 billion, ranking in the top 10 state-owned corporations with the best ROE and ROA ratios. It has made its mark with a strategy focusing on three main pillars: maritime transport, port exploitation and logistics services. VIMC's seaport system includes more than 16 large ports, accounting for about 30% of the country's seaport cargo volume. In addition, logistics centers in Hai Phong, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City not only effectively serve the domestic market but also expand connections with the global supply chain.

VIMC’s development is also reflected in its international stature, when many multinational corporations such as Maersk, MSC or CMA-CGM… proactively seek cooperation and sign agreements, opening up many positive business prospects. Strategic agreements with these “giants” clearly demonstrate the prestige and competitiveness of the enterprise in the international arena.

Towards a future of expansion and international integration

Entering the next stage of development, VIMC aims for continuous innovation and sustainability. The Corporation prioritizes the application of high technology in port management and logistics: process automation, platform digitalization and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to optimize the supply chain. In particular, green transport solutions and fleet upgrades are being vigorously deployed to reduce emissions and improve business efficiency.

On May 10, VIMC will hold a ceremony to celebrate its 30th anniversary and receive the Second Class Labor Medal.

In parallel with technological innovation, VIMC is promoting its global expansion strategy. Under the leadership of Chairman Le Anh Son and General Director Nguyen Canh Tinh, the corporation invests in deep-water ports, anticipating the shifting trend of the world's maritime industry. Projects such as Can Gio international transit port are being promoted, contributing to enhancing Vietnam's position on the regional maritime map.

Looking back on the 30-year journey, VIMC has affirmed its role as a solid pillar of the Vietnamese maritime industry, with many important contributions to socio-economic development. The upcoming 30th anniversary and receiving the Second Class Labor Medal on May 10 is a worthy recognition of those achievements.

As General Director Nguyen Canh Tinh shared: “We are like sailors, we cannot change the direction of the wind but we can adjust the sails”. With confidence and a clear strategy, VIMC turns 30 with many great goals and ambitions to conquer.
