Farewell to a great personality, a lifelong servant of the people

Việt NamViệt Nam24/07/2024

Our beloved General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has gone to follow Uncle Ho, to return to his ancestors, but his great and exceptionally outstanding contributions and achievements; the image of a simple man, a great personality of a courageous, intelligent, honest, and exemplary leader, will forever be imprinted in the minds of the Vietnamese people and the respect and admiration of international friends.

In recent days, in daily life, in the press, on social networking sites, we have been flooded with words, stories, and sentiments of deep affection from our compatriots in all parts of the country for General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong. Many people expressed their sadness as if they had lost a family member.

From the other side of the world, as soon as the news was known, during the regular meeting, The Cuban National Assembly observed a minute of silence. Comrade General Secretary of our Party; friendly countries declared to hold a State Funeral with many meaningful activities. Many countries, many heads of state such as Laos, China, Cambodia, Cuba, Russia, the US, ... sent telegrams, letters, messages of condolences before we announced to hold a State Funeral. What a special sentiment for the highest leader of our Party.

Exemplary and dedicated staff

When entering his eighties, everyone wants to rest and enjoy their family, but the General Secretary remained devoted and diligent in public work until his last breath. Thinking only of work, only caring for the people, for the Party, not caring about fame or anything for himself, but being very caring and close to his colleagues and subordinates is easy to see in him.

Every time we accompanied the General Secretary on field trips to localities, or attended and directed conferences, our group of specialized reporters always “harvested” from him many useful things for life and work, especially his way of thinking and looking at a problem. That is a methodical, careful and extremely exemplary working style. Work efficiency is always put first.

Once, after finishing his speech at the conference to disseminate the Resolution of the 4th Central Committee, Session XI of the Hanoi Party Committee, at 9 o'clock, he hurriedly got in the car to go to Nghe An to attend another important event. Each member of the delegation, including the General Secretary, had a lunch box and a bottle of water to use on the way. After that event, the delegation immediately returned to Hanoi, each person also had a lunch box and a bottle of water.

On another occasion, on a survey trip to the Central Highlands, after finishing work in Lam Dong province, the delegation went to Dak Nong province and stopped at a district-level agency along the way to have a meal, without informing the provincial leaders. On every trip, we felt that the General Secretary was always eager to reach the people faster and sooner, especially the ethnic minorities, remote areas where there were many difficulties.

On every trip, we feel that the General Secretary is always eager to reach the people faster and sooner, especially the ethnic minorities, remote areas where there are many difficulties.

When chairing conferences, working at localities or central agencies, looking at the General Secretary, everyone sees in him a very simple, calm, but determined and profound person. When discussing with local cadres, he always opens up, creates the most comfortable democratic atmosphere, gives priority to the grassroots, districts and provinces to speak first, does not control the time, so that they can say everything they need to say to the working delegation. The General Secretary asks any central cadre accompanying the delegation to speak briefly, not generally, but to come up with solutions that will help the locality.

With the clear and coherent thinking of a scientific researcher, the General Secretary's statements on each issue are clear. The way he speaks to the people and ethnic minorities is simple and close, but with key officials in the province, it is different, suitable for each subject, each working session, easy to listen and easy to understand.

Especially when talking about political theory, summarizing practices, renewing leadership methods, or building and rectifying the Party, the General Secretary rarely uses text but speaks naturally and engagingly as if he is pouring out his most cherished thoughts, from his own flesh and blood, which have been brewing for a long time. Not only is it easy to grasp the issue, but listeners are also strongly inspired by the speaker's intelligence, enthusiasm and sincerity.

When chairing and directing conferences and meetings on corruption prevention and control with complex and sensitive contents, the General Secretary often spends a lot of time thoroughly discussing issues, especially when there are different opinions, then concludes and clearly analyzes each task and the responsibilities of each agency and unit; never forgetting to remind and warn the forces doing this work.

“Must be honest, must be exemplary, must have courage, whoever is involved in corruption, will be dealt with first, dealt with severely”; “With your own feet still covered in dirt/You still hold a torch to rub other people’s feet”, who would accept it - the General Secretary emphasized many times.

Deeply regretted! The General Secretary has passed away amidst a busy schedule. But certainly, the scientific working style, honest and exemplary lifestyle of such a great personality will forever be a message for our cadres, party members and people to follow.

Dear and respected son of the people

In the General Secretary's working schedule when visiting localities, the first destination is often a commune far from the center, or a remote area, with many difficulties and shortages. The warm and friendly meetings with the people, sometimes only lasting ten minutes, leave deep feelings in everyone's hearts. Those deeply impressive images are when the General Secretary visits and works in some communes in many regions of the country, surrounded by people with bright, excited faces as if welcoming their loved ones back from far away.

We will always remember the trip to the most remote district of Muong Lat in Thanh Hoa province, right on Independence Day (September 2, 2011). After a journey of more than 8 hours, we had our first working session, arranged at Mr. Vang A Pao's house, Kham I village, Trung Ly commune. The house was about 70 square meters wide but there was no more space, people were standing in the yard and garden.

Everyone wanted to get close and hold the General Secretary’s hand. “Oh, Uncle Trong is so kind, folks. He is truly a blessing for the Party and our people!” Many people exclaimed; and we heard that statement many times when the General Secretary visited our compatriots in other localities.

At that time, out of 60 households in Kham I village, 55 were poor due to the difficult natural conditions. At the end of the meeting, the General Secretary visited and presented gifts to a number of households in the village, including the family of Ms. Thao Thi Ly. Her husband had passed away, and she was raising three small children alone. In the simple house of about 15 square meters, apart from a shabby bed and a few bundles of corn hanging on the kitchen loft, there was nothing else of note.

Talking to the host, the General Secretary's voice dropped. During the working session in the locality, he was very concerned about families in such circumstances. Why, after 66 years of independence, there are still many people suffering from hunger and poverty? It is our fault. What must we do, do it now and do it at all costs to relieve the suffering of the people?

Similar concerns were expressed many times by the General Secretary when visiting and working in some particularly difficult communes in the Northwest, Central, Central Highlands, or Southwest regions; and he repeated Uncle Ho's words, in essence, if the country is independent but the people do not enjoy freedom and happiness, then independence is meaningless.

Happily, later, through many information channels, we learned that life in those places has improved a lot, people know how to produce goods, have food and savings, travel, medical treatment, and children's education are no longer as difficult as before.

As the highest leader of the Party, but when coming to the people, everyone feels the General Secretary's affection as if coming to their own home. We remember the time we went to Tien Giang to learn about the organization of the implementation of the resolution on building new rural areas.

At the end of the working program, it was late in the afternoon, and the comrade unexpectedly visited a family, sat down to eat dragon fruit that the homeowner had just picked from the garden, and talked intimately about the experience of growing fruit trees, and whether there was any difficulty in selling them. The General Secretary even went out to the garden to see the dragon fruit trees, walking around a few times like a child returning from far away, remembering the beloved garden that was associated with his childhood.

On the same business trip to An Giang, when visiting a Hoa Hao family, it suddenly started to rain heavily; everyone rushed in. Arriving at the door, he bent down to take off his sandals and gently entered, greeting the waiting host. The General Secretary was such a person. Truly respectable and respectful, a small gesture, but everyone never forgot it and always used it to remind themselves.

During nearly three terms as General Secretary, he and the entire Party led the country to achieve many important achievements. Throughout the length of the country, home to 54 ethnic communities, including places he has set foot in or has not had the opportunity to visit, the image of the highest leader of our Party is always deeply imprinted in the hearts of everyone. I pray that the General Secretary will rest in peace, together with beloved Uncle Ho and revolutionary predecessors, to give spiritual strength to our nation on the journey ahead.
