The People's Army Film Studio's "Red Rain" has surpassed Tran Thanh 's "The Four Vengeful Spirits" (332 billion VND), becoming the highest-grossing Vietnamese film of 2025 to date. Notably, Meritorious Artist Dang Thai Huyen also made cinematic history by becoming the first female Vietnamese director to have a film surpass the 400 billion VND mark.
By the morning of September 4th, the film by the People's Army Film Studio had grossed over 465 billion VND. After two weeks of release, the appeal of "Red Rain" has not diminished at all.
Previously, on September 1st alone, the film grossed 55 billion VND, the highest single-day revenue for Vietnamese cinema, surpassing the record previously held by Tran Thanh's "Mai" (43.9 billion VND).
Launched on August 22nd, "Red Rain" has continuously set records and holds special significance as it is part of a series of activities commemorating the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day on September 2nd.
"Red Rain," a screenplay by writer Chu Lai, is inspired by the 81 days and nights of fighting to defend the Quang Tri Citadel in 1972.
The film follows Squad 1 at the Citadel front, where young soldiers, mostly students, meet, fight together, love each other, and are ready to sacrifice for their comrades and their homeland.
Amidst the intense flames and smoke, each character faces a life-or-death choice, grappling with the loss of comrades right beside them.
The film depicts the ferocity of bombing and shelling, with each trench and artillery barrage tearing through the sky of Quang Tri that year.
Beyond the battlefield, "Red Rain" also recreates the tense strategic battles at the Paris peace talks, where Vietnam asserted its resolve and righteousness. The intertwining of bloodshed and unwavering faith creates emotional depth, making the film a deeply moving epic.
The film by director and Meritorious Artist Dang Thai Huyen has become a heroic tribute, reminding today's generation of the courageous sacrifices and aspirations for peace of the Vietnamese people.
