Boxer Imane Khelif bursts into tears after winning Olympic medal: "I am a woman"

(Dan Tri) - Female boxer Imane Khelif, whose gender is suspected, has secured herself a medal by defeating opponent Luca Anna Hamori in the welterweight quarterfinals at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
"I am a woman," Algerian welterweight Imane Khelif declared in tears after her dominant win over Hungary's Luca Anna Hamori secured a place in the Paris 2024 semi-finals.

Khelif was banned from the World Championships last year by the International Boxing Association after they declared she had failed a gender test. However, she was still allowed to compete at the Paris Games by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The 25-year-old Algerian boxer shocked the world when she defeated her opponent in the opening match after just 46 seconds. Khelif's punch was so powerful right from the start that Italian boxer Angela Carini had to retire to ensure her own safety. And in the quarter-finals, Khelif continued to show her superior strength, winning an overwhelming decision by the judges. Khelif is certain to win a medal when she reaches the semi-finals, becoming the first Algerian woman to win an Olympic medal.

After winning, Khelif sobbed and declared to the media: "I want to tell the whole world that I am a woman and I will always be a woman." The Algerian boxer added: "I am still very happy. This victory is to honor Algeria, Algerian women and Algerian boxing." Imane Khelif will meet Thai boxer Janjaem Suwannapheng in the semi-finals on August 6 and if she wins, she will have a gold medal match on August 9.
