Local police in the Bergamo region said the incident occurred on the night of May 3 at a pub in the area. Groups of fans from the two teams clashed after an Inter fan verbally provoked them.

According to Carmelo Beringheli, head of the Bergamo Police Office, the conflict continued to escalate on a street near Atalanta's stadium. After extreme words, both sides caused bloody violence when a man identified as an Inter fan stabbed an Atalanta fan.

Despite paramedics arriving at the scene, they were unable to save the victim. The unfortunate Atalanta fan has been identified as Riccardo Claris.

Mr Beringheli added that the suspect, a young man in his late 20s, has been arrested. He admitted that he acted to protect his brother. The case is under further investigation.

In memory of the deceased fan, Atalanta fans unfurled a large banner before the match between Atalanta and Monza on May 4, a match that Atalanta won 4-0. The banner read: "Claris Ovunque con noi" ("Claris is always with us").

Coach Gian Piero Gasperini said after the match: "What happened to our fans must never be repeated." He expressed his grief and called on the relevant parties to take action to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.

The incident has sparked outrage and concern in the Italian football community, and has highlighted the problem of fan violence, which has been a persistent problem for many years.
