Unprecedented productivity
For nearly a week now, the weather has been relatively favorable for farmers in Thai Nguyen , with bright sunshine everywhere, making it easy to harvest and store rice. Ms. Vi Thi Thuan, a resident of Trang Xa commune, said: "My family planted more than 5 sao (approximately 0.5 hectares) of rice in the spring crop. I am very happy that the rice yield is unprecedentedly high, over 2.3 quintals per sao."
Like Mrs. Thuan, most households in the province had a bumper harvest, exceeding all expectations.
Explaining the reason for the "record-breaking" spring rice yield, Mr. Nguyen Ta, Head of the Provincial Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, said: The spring weather was favorable for crop growth and development. Crop pests and diseases were also lower this season compared to the same period in 2024.
Furthermore, the fact that most rice-growing areas apply advanced rice cultivation techniques suitable to specific conditions, such as the "3 reductions - 3 increases" method and the SRI system, is also an important factor contributing to high rice yields.
According to the plan, the entire province aimed for a yield of 56 quintals/hectare for this spring crop; the results exceeded expectations, with rice yield surpassing the plan by 4 quintals/hectare.
This is a memorable milestone for the province as the "6-ton rice field" has become a reality in various hamlets, villages, and communities in Thai Nguyen, bringing prosperity and peace to the people.

Proactive response to unusual weather conditions.
This year's crop season in Thai Nguyen is predicted to take place under unusual weather conditions. According to the National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting, from June to August, hot weather and moderate to heavy rain will occur in many areas of Northern Vietnam, including Thai Nguyen.
This period may bring dangerous weather phenomena such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong gusts of wind. From September to November, heavy rainfall across a wide area tends to increase. In the North, including Thai Nguyen, there may be 3-4 flood events, with water levels in major rivers, especially the Cau River, reaching alarm levels 1-2, and smaller rivers potentially exceeding alarm level 3, posing significant risks to rice production.
Mr. Nguyen Ta emphasized: In order to respond to climate change, the implementation of the crop season must be appropriate to the specific conditions of each locality, ensuring that the early rice crop is harvested before September 30th to create land for planting winter crops.
Accordingly, farmers have been plowing and burying rice stubble immediately after harvesting the spring rice crop, combined with treatment using biological products as recommended by specialized agencies to quickly decompose the straw, limiting organic poisoning and pest damage to the summer rice crop. They are also increasing the use of short-day, high-yielding, high-quality, pest-resistant varieties. In addition, they are preparing sufficient quantities of ultra-short-day rice seeds to account for flooding caused by storms, which can kill seedlings and rice plants, requiring replanting…

To prevent and mitigate flooding that could affect rice yield and production, the province has implemented rational irrigation and drainage plans, applying alternating wet and dry irrigation, and water reserves. Proactive measures to respond to unusual weather patterns have also been put in place. The application of mechanization in planting and transplanting has been intensified.
In addition, agricultural extension work, the transfer of new technical advancements, the development of value chain linkage models, and the use of agricultural by-products as organic fertilizers to supplement and partially replace inorganic fertilizers, contributing to reduced production costs, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and improved product quality, continued to be strengthened during the cropping season.
Currently, communes in the northern part of the province are harvesting the last areas of spring rice, while in the lowland communes, farmers have sown and planted summer rice on about 31,000 hectares, reaching over 60% of the area. The entire province is striving to complete the planting of summer rice by July.
The implementation of the crop season continues to receive support from specialized agencies, especially in the areas of investigation, forecasting, and pest and disease control, as well as inspection and control of the production and trading of seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides, ensuring a stable supply of agricultural materials in terms of quantity and quality to serve production.
