Sustainable farming mindset

Visiting Mr. Tran Chi Linh's farm on a scorching hot day, it's easy to notice the significant changes in this hilly area. Mr. Linh shared that, recognizing the potential of the land in Vinh Thuy commune for agricultural development, he decided to settle there in 1996. Over the years, through both production and experience, he has gradually planned and built a comprehensive economic model with a total production area of tens of hectares.

Currently, Mr. Linh is maintaining a diversified farming model combining agriculture and scientific livestock breeding. On 3 hectares of hilly land, he focuses on growing oranges and green pomelos. In addition, he has allocated 4 hectares of melaleuca trees for rotational harvesting, 4 hectares of rubber trees, and 1 hectare of corn. The corn cultivation is not only for grain harvesting but also to utilize local agricultural by-products as feed for his herd of 20 Vietnamese yellow cattle, aiming to become self-sufficient in livestock feed.

Not stopping there, he also utilized the space under the trees to plant 600-700 yellow apricot trees and raise an additional 100 broiler chickens (fighting chicken breed) to increase his income. Thanks to the rational arrangement of crops and livestock in a closed-loop system, this model not only helps his family optimize the cultivated area but also minimizes input costs. This is an important foundation for the farm to maintain a stable and sustainable income.

Speaking about the secret to successful crop growth on the not-so-fertile land, Mr. Linh said: “This land is rocky and has poor moisture retention, so I determined that I must regularly fertilize and water the plants, especially during the hot summer months. In particular, I focus on organic farming. Only when the soil is well-improved and the plants receive sufficient nutrients will the orchard thrive, yielding high productivity and economic efficiency.”

Encourage replication.

The economic benefits from Mr. Linh's farm model have not only helped his family become wealthy but also motivated other villagers to learn from and follow his example. However, the road leading to his production area and many other households in the village is still a dirt road. In the summer, it's dusty, and in the rainy season, it becomes muddy, causing considerable difficulties for transporting agricultural products and conducting trade. Mr. Linh hopes that relevant authorities will soon pay attention to and invest in upgrading this road to make it easier for people to produce and sell their products.

Mr. Diep Hong Cuong, Head of the Economic Department of Vinh Thuy Commune, said: “Mr. Linh's integrated economic model is a prime example of resourcefulness and resilience. Organic farming is the right approach, aligning with the current trend of sustainable agricultural development, enhancing the value of agricultural products and protecting the ecological environment. The local government highly appreciates this approach and encourages other households in the area to learn from and replicate it, effectively utilizing hilly land and contributing to the socio-economic development of the locality.”

From Mr. Tran Chi Linh's model, it can be seen that, with diligence, proactive application of science and technology, and a spirit of daring to think and act, farmers can completely transform difficult lands into "golden land." However, for these models to be sustainable and widely disseminated, in addition to the efforts of the people, the support and cooperation of all levels of government are essential, especially in improving essential infrastructure.
