Tam Dao National Park – “Treasure” on the mountain of Vinh Phuc province

Located in three provinces of Vinh Phuc , Tuyen Quang, Thai Nguyen with an area of nearly 35,000 hectares, Tam Dao National Park is home to hundreds of animal species along with rich vegetation creating a poetic landscape.

Tam Dao National Park is located entirely within the Tam Dao mountain range, the peaks in the range are 1,000m above sea level. The terrain here is sharp peaks, steep slopes, deep and thick divisions.

There are four main soil types in the national park, including yellow humus feralit soil developed on acidic magma rocks; red-yellow humus feralit soil distributed on low mountains, developed on crystalline magma rocks; red-yellow feralit soil developed on many different types of rocks; and finally, alluvial and sloping soil at an altitude of 100m or less.

The Tam Dao mountain range has different annual rainfall, contributing to the creation of microclimates. All of this creates a national park covered with a dense, multi-layered vegetation and diverse biological communities and ecosystems.

There are 26,163 hectares of forest, mainly natural evergreen rainforest with a coverage of 70%. In addition, the park also has subtropical evergreen closed rainforest, dwarf forest on mountain tops, bamboo forests, forests recovered after exploitation, planted forests, shrublands, and grasslands.

Tam Dao National Park is estimated to have 1,282 plant species belonging to 660 genera of 179 families of higher plants, including typical species of the subtropical region. There are 42 endemic species and 64 rare species that need to be preserved such as Tam Dao orchid, long-flowered camellia, yellow camellia, fairy flower, climbing flower panicle, and money tree.

This place also owns 163 species of animals belonging to 158 families of 39 orders, in 5 classes: mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs and insects. The garden also has up to 239 species of beautiful birds such as orioles, white-throated geese, pink geese, red geese... There are rare species such as money chickens, white pheasants; there are 64 valuable species of animals such as flying squirrels, clouded leopards, tigers, bears, civets, gibbons, black langurs...

In particular, there are 39 endemic animal species here, including 11 narrow endemic species such as Amphiesma angeli; Boiga multitempolaris; Paramerotriton deloustali and 8 other insect species.

Within the grounds of Tam Dao National Park , there is also a bear rescue center, which raises and conserves more than 100 bears. On an area of 12 hectares, the bear rescue center is raising sun bears and moon bears. When visiting, visitors should be careful not to speak loudly, call bears or feed bears, as this can be dangerous.

The center has 30,000 square meters of semi-natural, outdoor space designed to stimulate the bears’ natural behavior. The center is only open to the public two days a month, so call ahead to make sure you don’t miss out.
