According to New Zealand media, Australian coach Tony Gustavsson is considered a potential candidate to lead the US team after a disastrous performance at the 2023 Women's World Cup. It was the US's worst performance ever at the tournament and head coach Vlatko Andonovski submitted his resignation on August 16.
The US team was one of the brightest candidates for the most prestigious championship in women 's world football, but was stopped early in the round of 16 by Sweden on penalties, with a score of 5-4, after a 0-0 draw in 120 minutes.
Andonovski's predecessor, former US coach Jill Ellis, said Gustavsson was the right man to lead the world's number one team after their success with hosts Australia, regardless of the result in the third-place match.

Coach Jill Ellis told ESPN: "He's definitely a strong candidate for the job. He and his team have enough credit for leading Australia to success in the tournament last year without one of the best players in the world for much of the tournament.
Most of us as coaches wouldn't say Australia are contenders without Sam Kerr, so that's quite remarkable."
