Lam Kiet Commune today

STO - In 2020, Lam Kiet commune, Thanh Tri district (Soc Trang province) achieved the new rural standard. With the motto "New rural development has only a starting point, not an end point," the commune has continued to implement many solutions to maintain and improve the quality and effectiveness of the new rural development criteria. After more than four years of implementing the advanced new rural development program, by 2024, the commune had completed all 19 criteria and was recognized as a commune meeting the advanced new rural development standard.

Lam Kiet commune is a Zone I commune, inhabited by ethnic minorities, with the Khmer people accounting for over 50% of the total population. The lives of the people mainly depend on agricultural production, so they still face many difficulties. However, since the commune implemented the National Target Program for New Rural Development and achieved the New Rural Development standard in 2020, it has undergone many changes. Investment from higher levels of government in infrastructure such as electricity, roads, schools, and health stations, along with support for widespread irrigation projects, has helped the commune develop agriculture sustainably.

The highlights of Lam Kiet commune's achievement of advanced new rural standards include: over 90% of inter-hamlet roads being paved; roads being planted with ornamental flowers and sidewalks being kept clean; and a synchronized lighting system ensuring aesthetics and safety. 100% of small-scale and on-field irrigation works are maintained annually; over 90% of agricultural land is actively irrigated and drained. Nearly 100% of households use safe electricity for living and production. 100% of schools at all levels meet level 1 and 2 infrastructure standards. Over 70% of hamlets meet cultural standards as stipulated in the commune; and all 6 hamlets have community centers...

Regarding agriculture, Lam Kiet commune is very concerned with developing sustainable agriculture and increasing income for its residents. To improve the efficiency of agricultural production, especially rice (the commune's main crop), the commune has established agricultural cooperatives to gather farmers into collective economic activities , creating large quantities of high-quality rice to link with companies and businesses for better rice prices. In addition, the commune has formed large-scale fields focusing on the production of high-quality and specialty rice varieties, and guided households in rice cultivation to apply the "3 reductions, 3 increases," "1 must, 5 reductions" technical processes, producing rice organically and according to sustainable standards (SRP), and applying mechanization in 100% of land preparation, 40% of sowing, 100% of irrigation, 100% of spraying, and 100% of harvesting. In addition, the commune has implemented a smart rice farming model adapted to climate change, improving productivity and reducing production costs, helping farmers increase profits; and participated in the "Sustainable Development of One Million Hectares of High-Quality and Low-Emission Rice Specialization Associated with Green Growth in the Mekong Delta by 2030" project, with a total area of ​​1,430 hectares. A highlight of the commune's agriculture is its FIFTEEN cantaloupe product, which has achieved OCOP 3-star rating...

Comrade Nguyen Quoc Trang - Chairman of the People's Committee of Lam Kiet commune, said that in order to maintain and improve all 19 criteria for advanced new rural development, the commune will focus resources on investing in and upgrading socio-economic infrastructure in a comprehensive manner, suitable to the socio-economic development conditions of the locality, developing the rural economy, and improving the lives of the people. The commune will mobilize the people to protect the invested transportation infrastructure, such as clearing vegetation, preventing landslides, promptly repairing damaged sections, and preventing the infrastructure from deteriorating... It will also develop irrigation infrastructure to serve production in conjunction with the restructuring of the agricultural sector, with plans to dredge inland canals to ensure irrigation and drainage, and to create closed production areas with pumping stations in the hamlets to bring about high efficiency in agricultural production…
