One day before the football draw, the Organizing Committee of the 32nd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 32) finalized the number of participating teams in the men's and women's football events.
Since women's football was included in the SEA Games competition program in 1995, the largest number of participating teams was only 7 teams (2001, 2003, and 2022 - Vietnam won gold medals in all 3 of these games).
With 9 teams participating in women's football, SEA Games 32 has confirmed a new record.
Despite the record number of participants, the medal race is actually only between strong contenders such as Vietnam, the Philippines (2 representatives of Southeast Asia at the 2023 Women's World Cup), Thailand and Myanmar.
This group is considered much stronger than the other women's teams in Southeast Asia.
Meanwhile, the men's football event will feature 10 U22 teams. The only absentee is U22 Brunei. Thus, Brunei is the only country not participating in both the men's and women's football events.
The draw ceremony for men's and women's football will take place at 3:00 p.m. this afternoon (April 5) in Phnom Penh (Cambodia).
In men's football, host U22 Cambodia will be the number one seed, code A1. Meanwhile, defending champion U22 Vietnam is also the number one seed, code B1, in the remaining group.
In women's football, the Vietnamese women's team is definitely in the top seed group, code B1, with 3 consecutive recent championships. Host Cambodia has code A1.
List of teams participating in women's football: Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
List of teams participating in men's football: U22 Cambodia, U22 Indonesia, U22 Laos, U22 Malaysia, U22 Myanmar, U22 Philippines, U22 Singapore, U22 Thailand, U22 Vietnam and U22 Timor Leste.
