What is E5 gasoline?
E5 bioethanol is a blend created by mixing traditional mineral gasoline with biofuel. E5 gasoline contains 5% by volume of bioethanol and 95% by volume of traditional gasoline.
Ethanol, derived from sugarcane, corn, or cassava, is environmentally friendly and helps reduce CO2 emissions.
E5 gasoline has been widely used in Vietnam since 2018.
What is E10 gasoline?

E10 gasoline is a biofuel created by blending 10% by volume of bioethanol with 90% by volume of traditional gasoline (mineral gasoline).
The addition of ethanol helps E10 gasoline burn more cleanly, significantly reducing harmful emissions (CO, HC) and greenhouse gases compared to conventional gasoline.
What is the difference between E5 and E10 gasoline?
E5 gasoline and E10 gasoline differ mainly in their octane rating (RON) and the percentage of ethanol blended into the gasoline, specifically:
Criteria | E5 gasoline | E10 gasoline |
Ingredient | 5% bioethanol and 95% mineral gasoline | 10% bioethanol and 90% mineral gasoline |
Octane rating | 92 | 95 |
High acceleration, anti-knock | Medium | Better |
Environmental friendliness level | Good | Better |
Consumption rate | Less fuel-consuming than E10 (the difference is very small, difficult to notice during actual driving). | It consumes slightly more fuel than E5 (about 1-2%) because the heat energy released by bioethanol is lower than that of conventional gasoline. |
Price | Cheap | A little higher |
Engine compatibility | A wide variety of car models | Caution is needed with very old vehicles. |
According to the Vietnam Petroleum Association, older vehicles – those manufactured before 2000 and using carburetors – should undergo basic maintenance before switching to E10 bioethanol fuel.
This may include cleaning the fuel supply system, replacing the fuel filter, and adjusting the carburetor to ensure smoother vehicle operation.
Meanwhile, for newer vehicles using electronic fuel injection systems, users should also clean the fuel system regularly to ensure smooth operation of the biofuel.
E10 gasoline will be widely available nationwide starting tomorrow, June 1st. However, to ensure that all types of vehicles have access to this fuel, the Ministry of Industry and Trade will continue to maintain the availability of E5 RON92 gasoline until December 31st, 2030.
