A representative of Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Company No. 1 (HURC1, the operator) said that Ho Chi Minh City Metro Line No. 1 (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien Metro Line) has just passed the 2-week mark since its official commercial operation on December 22, 2024.

With a 100% discount on tickets in the first month, the number of metro passengers in the first two weeks increased by 300% compared to the plan. There are 200 trains serving passengers every day. Of which, the record service is 220 trains from 5am to 11pm on December 31, 2024 (an increase of 1 hour compared to the daily operating schedule) and 246 trains on January 1, 2025, increased to 2am.

“Hundreds of thousands of passengers use the metro every day. The peak on New Year's Day, January 1, 2025, saw a spike in the number of passengers with 275,144,” said a HURC1 representative.

To attract visitors, Ho Chi Minh City is considering options to enhance traffic connections with metro line 1. Recently, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has approved the policy for Thuong Nhat Company Limited (Thuong Nhat Company) to invest in the construction and temporary exploitation of an inland waterway wharf along the Saigon River, adjacent to the land next to Ba Son station of metro line 1.

Accordingly, this inland wharf only transports and serves waterway vehicles to dock and pick up passengers, and does not anchor waterway vehicles within the wharf's operating waters. This wharf is temporarily operated and exploited until Ho Chi Minh City requests clearance and relocation.

To implement the above plan, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee assigned the Department of Transport to coordinate with the People's Committee of District 1 and relevant agencies and units to guide Thuong Nhat Company to temporarily build the above-mentioned inland waterway wharf.

District 1 People's Committee instructed Thuong Nhat Company to implement the design plan and renovate the area around Ba Son station, Ba Son wharf and Ba Son bridge foot to ensure urban aesthetics, in harmony with the landscape in the area and Bach Dang wharf park.

The operator of metro line No. 1 (HURC1) believes that adding Ba Son wharf is necessary. The formation of the wharf will create the ability to connect waterway traffic, helping passengers access waterway transport services and form a multimodal transit point, focusing on people's travel needs, promoting tourism services...

Ms. Nguyen Thi Da Thao - Director of the Public Transport Management Center of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport said that in addition to 17 electric bus routes connecting directly at metro stations, the current bus system has 44 existing bus routes (30 routes are suitable for access and connection; 14 routes are adjusted for connection) that can access the stations of metro line 1, bringing the total number of bus routes that can access metro line 1 to 61 routes.

In the area of Van Thanh, Thao Dien, Rach Chiec, Phuoc Long, Binh Thai stations, there are 5 parking lots with pedestrian bridges connecting to the station with a total area of 5,077m2 serving connecting bus routes. The private parking lot has a total capacity of more than 2,000 2-wheeled vehicles.

In addition, the Ho Chi Minh City Public Transport Management Center also invested in adding 23 new bus shelters to access stations on the Hanoi - Vo Nguyen Giap Highway axis and 230 stops for newly opened bus routes.

“To enhance the connection of public passenger transport with metro line 1, in addition to the above bus system, the Center has coordinated with consulting units to deploy other public passenger transport methods directly connecting at the station areas, such as: public bicycles, electric vehicles (four-wheeled vehicles running on electric energy), taxis, four-wheeled and two-wheeled technology vehicles to increase convenience for people and tourists when using the metro”.

For a civilized traffic environment

According to HURC1 representative, besides positive signals, the operating team discovered many violations in the first 2 weeks of operation, affecting the quality and experience of all passengers.

Common violations include: violations of regulations on doors and safety warning lines. Many passengers do not line up at the entrance, escalators and trains, causing disorder and affecting other passengers. There are cases of jostling and pushing to quickly get on/off the train, causing traffic safety risks.

Along with that are behaviors such as: passengers using priority elevators for the wrong purposes; bringing food, drinks and pets into the station; using photography equipment and unsafe photography behaviors and not being aware of maintaining public hygiene...

“The operating team hopes that all metro passengers will continue to comply with regulations, build and preserve metro culture for a more civilized, modern and safe traffic environment,” said HURC1.

The leader of the Ho Chi Minh City Public Transport Management Center said that along the metro line No. 1, in addition to the 2-wheeled vehicle parking lots at the elevated stations, the center has completed and put into use 5 personal 2-wheeled vehicle parking lots under the project "Enhancing accessibility and organizing connections between bus routes and stations on metro line No. 1" to make it easier for people to use the train to travel, gradually forming the habit of using public transport every day.
