Ukrainian engineer Sergii Gordieiev replaced the round wheels on conventional bicycles with square-framed wheels, using mostly recycled parts.
Sergii Gordieiev built his own square-wheeled bicycle. Video : The Q
Gordieiev shared the process of creating the square-wheeled bicycle on April 9th in a video on his YouTube channel, The Q, according to Design Boom. He started by creating the rim for the square wheel. Gordieiev cut a block of steel into several sections and welded them together to make the rim. Then, Gordieiev attached the gears, added the chain, and cut the round tire into long strips to easily wrap around the new rim. As soon as the square wheel was finished, he removed the original wheel from the bike and replaced it with the new one.
This type of wheel isn't perfectly square because the round gears are arranged along the edges and four corners so that the outer rubber tire can move accordingly. Therefore, the bike doesn't actually roll through right angles. With this type of wheel, riding a bicycle isn't as easy and smooth as with round wheels. The advantage of square-wheeled bicycles is that they can stand upright without a kickstand, which is very convenient when needing to park in tight spaces.
The bike looks a bit bulky due to the square steel rims of the wheels, but the frame is quite lightweight. According to Gordieiev, this bicycle design runs normally and can turn. His creation could inspire people to think outside the box in design.
