Watch China's electric supercar fly over obstacles

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí07/01/2025

(Dan Tri) - Without needing a person behind the wheel to control it, the supercar can fly over nail fields, water holes...

Yangwang is BYD's premium electric vehicle brand, and the U9 is the company's second model, after the U8 SUV. The U8 model attracted attention because it could float on its front, while the U9 supercar is equipped with a hydraulic system and Disus X suspension, allowing the car to jump over obstacles or turn around.

BYD has just released a video showing the Yangwang U9, a driverless vehicle, driving on a test track at speeds of up to 120km/h. According to BYD, the first obstacle is a 6m wide, 2.5m long water hole. As the electric car approaches the hole, the suspension system lifts the car over the hole.

The next obstacle is a pile of spikes about 3.5cm high and 4m long. Like the water hole, the Disus X suspension system helps the U9 supercar jump over the pile of spikes.

And the final obstacle is 4 colored dust strips 4m long.

BYD did not provide any other details about the test, such as which ADAS advanced driver assistance systems were used. BYD has previously announced partnerships with technology companies DJI and Horizon Robotics to develop ADAS systems.

The Yangwang U9 was launched in China in February 2024 with a price tag of 1.68 million yuan (US$23,000). The first batch of cars was delivered to customers in August 2024.

The U9 is a pure electric supercar that uses BYD's e4 chassis platform and Disus X suspension system that allows the car to run on 3 wheels, rotate, or bounce as in the video.

The Yangwang U9 is powered by four electric motors, with a combined output of 1,287 horsepower and 1,680Nm of torque. The car can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 2.36 seconds and drag from 0 to 400m in 9.78 seconds. In November 2024, the Yangwang U9 completed the Nürburgring in 7 minutes 17.9 seconds.

Unlike other supercars, the U9 does not use lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC) batteries but uses cheaper lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. The battery pack has a capacity of 80kWh, enough for the car to travel 465km after each full charge, according to CLTC standards.

The U9 model has dimensions of length, width, and height of 4,966 x 2,029 x 1,295 (mm), with a wheelbase of 2,900mm. The car weighs 2,475kg, quite heavy compared to supercar standards.

The U9 uses an 800V platform, which can charge the battery from 30% to 80% in 10 minutes. This supercar also supports dual charging, meaning you can plug in two independent charging guns at the same time.
