( Quang Ngai Newspaper) - There are many names of ancient villages, among which it is impossible to avoid duplicate names. In the past, in Quang Ngai, there were 5 villages with the same name, that is Chau Me village.
In the past, Quang Ngai had many villages with the same name. For example, Le Thuy village, in Binh Tri commune (Binh Son) had the same name as Le Thuy village, Tinh Chau commune, Son Tinh district (now Quang Ngai city). In Binh Son, Tu Nghia and Mo Duc districts, there was a village named Phu Nhieu. There were quite a few villages with the same name, but there was a rare case of 5 villages with the same name, that was Chau Me village.
Specifically, the name of Chau Me village, now a hamlet in Binh Chau commune (Binh Son). This Chau Me village originated from Chau Me Dong commune in the feudal period, with 7 hamlets, including Chau Me village. Chau Me Dong is also the name of a river. In the past, the junks going to trade between the North and the South often gathered here, the trade was quite prosperous, so the people had a saying: "It is rumored that Dong Phuoc has a lot of bamboo/ Tham Hoi has a lot of rice, Chau Me has a lot of money".
In Nghia Hanh district, Chau Me is the name of the village, later changed to Phu Chau, the name of the village now belongs to Hanh Duc commune. There is Chau Me communal house with many royal decrees. During the reign of King Gia Long, Chau Me was a village belonging to Don Dien, Chuong Nghia district, with an area of 155 hectares, of which the official land was 44 hectares and 4 sao, the private land was 77 hectares, and the idle land was 24 hectares and 7 sao (Quang Ngai land register). During the reign of King Dong Khanh, Chau Me village belonged to Nghia Trung commune, Chuong Nghia district.

Also in Nghia Hanh district is Chau Me village, now a hamlet of Hanh Thinh commune. Chau Me village is located in the south of Hanh Thinh commune, bordering Duc Phu commune (Mo Duc), adjacent to the rolling hills to the west. During the resistance war against the US, the resistance activities of Hanh Thinh commune started early from this village. In Duc Phong (Mo Duc), there is also Chau Me village. This village has National Highway 1 running through it, it is a farming village, some people do business on the National Highway. Next to Chau Me is Tu Son village, Duc Lan commune, which used to be a rather deserted road, so there is a saying: "If you don't go, you're afraid of losing your husband's heart/ If you go, you're afraid of Tu Son fields".
In the south of Quang Ngai, there is Chau Me village in Pho Chau commune (Duc Pho town). During the Saigon government, Chau Me was a hamlet in Pho Chau commune, Duc Pho district; the population in 1962 was 807 people. After 1975, Pho Chau commune merged into Pho Thanh commune, Chau Me was a hamlet of Pho Thanh commune. On June 23, 1999, Pho Chau commune was re-established, Chau Me became a hamlet of Pho Chau commune. Here, there is a mountain at the edge of the sea also named Chau Me, with many sea urchins in the rocks. Local people often make sea urchin sauce (also known as "preferential sauce", used to offer to the king) which has been famous since ancient times.
The word “Chau” in the name of Binh Chau commune and the word “Chau” in the name of Pho Chau commune are both taken from the name of Chau Me village. Chau Me village, Binh Chau commune has rivers and seas, and this place has produced many famous figures such as Phan Khac Than (Nam Ngai Governor), or patriotic scholar, bachelor Tran Ky Phong and scholars with the surname Dang. Chau Me village, Pho Chau commune is known by many people because this place has beautiful, pristine scenery and many delicious seafood dishes.
What does Chau Me mean? In the original Chinese text, Chau Me can be read as Chu Me or Chau Mi, in which Chau or Chu means red, Me or Mi means eyebrows, lips. It is impossible to explain why. It is also possible that Chau Me is a transliteration of a Cham place name, meaningless. And it is also impossible to explain why in Quang Ngai province there are 5 villages named Chau Me. How special!
