Several major banks such as the Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam ( Agribank ), Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam (Vietcombank)... have just issued warnings about a form of fraud impersonating bank employees to support biometric updates in order to steal banking service information.
Previously, according to regulations of the State Bank of Vietnam , from July 1, all online money transfer transactions of more than 10 million VND/transaction or cumulatively more than 20 million VND/day must be biometrically authenticated (face, fingerprint).

To support authentication, the State Bank has issued a document guiding people to perform biometric authentication operations. Banks also have announcements and instructions to help people easily perform facial biometric authentication operations.
However, on the first day of applying the regulation, biometric authentication still had difficulties. In some banking applications, although users tried many times, they still could not do it successfully.
Taking advantage of the situation where some customers had difficulty updating their biometric information, the scammers impersonated employees of this bank and contacted customers to request "support" in installing biometrics in order to appropriate assets and information...
Accordingly, some common fraud methods being carried out by these subjects are: Call, text, make friends via social networks (Zalo, Facebook,...) of customers to guide them in collecting biometric information.
The scammers also created confusing nicknames such as "Bank staff", "Customer support"... and mixed in with customer comments under posts on the bank's official social networking site. After asking customers to contact them by private message (inbox) to lure them with information about banking services.
Then, they ask customers to provide personal information, bank accounts, citizen identification images, facial images... to get support. The subject can even request a video call to collect more voice, gestures...
Banks recommend that customers only update biometric information via banking applications.
Next, the scammers ask customers to access a strange link to download and install an application that supports biometric collection on their phones... After obtaining the information, the subjects will proceed to appropriate money from the customer's bank account.
Vietcombank confirmed that the bank did not Ask customers to provide personal information via channels such as phone calls, SMS, email, chat software (Zalo, Viber, Facebook messenger...).
Therefore, customers absolutely do not click on links or provide account security information, digital banking services (login name, password, OTP code), card services (card number, OTP code), account information or any other banking service security information or personal information.
Vietcombank also recommends that customers do not share Personal information, banking service information, information is exploited by scammers to steal money.
At present, banks also recommend that customers only update biometric information via banking applications, absolutely not via any other website or application to avoid the risk of fraud and fraud. If you cannot do it yourself, you can go to the bank's transaction counter for direct support.
Previously, the Ministry of Public Security also recommended that people not provide personal data, OTP codes, not click on links or download applications at the request of strangers, not buy, sell, exchange, rent, or borrow payment accounts, bank cards, or identification documents; set up two-layer security and limit sharing personal information online.
