The reason why coffee prices have been increasing continuously over the past two years is due to the impact of harsh weather, which has caused a sharp decrease in productivity. At the same time, from 2022 onwards, coffee export prices have always been low, causing farmers to suffer losses. Many farmers have cut down coffee trees and replaced them with durian and other fruit trees.
In Dong Nai , over the past 5 years, the area of coffee trees has decreased rapidly. According to the Dong Nai Statistics Office, by the end of 2024, the province's coffee area will be only nearly 4.8 thousand hectares, with an output of nearly 13 thousand tons/year. Most coffee gardens in the province are intercropped with other crops such as pepper and fruit trees, so the yield is not high.
According to economic experts, the world coffee market in the coming time will still have demand exceeding supply, prices will continue to increase. However, to maintain the export market, growers and businesses must cooperate, produce according to green, circular processes, and trace their origin. In particular, coffee exported to the European Union from mid-2025 onwards must prove that it is not grown on forest land and does not cause deforestation.
For many years, Vietnam has always been in the top of the world 's coffee exports, but most of them are only exported raw, through intermediaries and have not built a brand. This makes the added value of Vietnamese coffee not high. Therefore, the coffee industry of Dong Nai as well as the whole country invests in deep processing, builds a brand, the export turnover can easily exceed 10 billion USD, with the possibility of reaching 15-20 billion USD and higher. Because, deep processed coffee when exported can increase the value from 2-6 times compared to raw exports.
