The Mekong Delta is considered the "chili capital" of Vietnam. Here, chili peppers are grown most extensively in the provinces of Dong Thap, An Giang , Tien Giang, Soc Trang, Vinh Long, and Tra Vinh, with a total area of over 7,000 hectares and an annual production of approximately 100,000 tons. Meanwhile, in the Central Highlands, the cultivated area reaches about 4,000-5,000 hectares with an annual production of approximately 60,000 tons.

Since March 2022, fresh chili peppers from Vietnam have been approved for export to the Chinese market. Accordingly, all shipments of fresh chili peppers must undergo quarantine treatment by Vietnamese authorities or authorized by Vietnamese authorities, and the relevant parameters must be clearly indicated in the phytosanitary certificate.

What is driving China's increased imports of Vietnamese chili peppers? According to experts, Vietnamese chili peppers are known for their high spiciness and diverse varieties. Some of the exported chili varieties include: bird's eye chili, chili pepper, yellow horn chili, sweet chili, and ground chili.

Furthermore, seasonal variations also contribute to higher export volumes. In China, harvesting mainly takes place from June to October each year. In Vietnam, chili peppers are typically grown in two seasons, resulting in multiple harvesting periods: from April to early July and from January to February.

Chili peppers are a familiar fruit to Vietnamese consumers. Farmers consider chili peppers a "one investment, ten returns" crop because they have a short growing season, can be intercropped with fruit trees, and do not require much care, making them suitable for farming conditions throughout the country.

Typically, chili peppers are planted between September and November each year. After 2 months of planting, the chili plants begin to yield 3 to 4 harvests over a period of 3 months, with the highest quality peppers reaching an ideal weight of up to 4 kg per plant.
