Fruit and vegetable export turnover in the first 5 months reached nearly 1.9 billion USD, up 29% over the same period last year thanks to China increasing its large purchases.
The information is stated in the latest report of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association. Among the top 10 fruit and vegetable export markets, China, the US, the Netherlands, and Malaysia have the strongest growth rates. China alone bought 805 million USD worth of fruit and vegetables from Vietnam, accounting for 59% of the market share (last year it accounted for 53%).
Sharing with VnExpress , Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tung - General Director of Vina T&T Import-Export Company said that in the first months of the year, despite competition from Thailand, Cambodia, and the Philippines, Vietnam's fruit export turnover still made a breakthrough.
At his company, while the turnover of the US and Canadian markets decreased, China was the "support" that helped export activities grow by 20% in sales in the first 4 months of the year. Of which, durian, dragon fruit, and banana are the export items to China with strong growth. With durian, this year his company has a contract to export 1,500 containers (each container weighs 15 tons) to this market.
"Export prospects in the second half of the year will be brighter as Vietnamese agricultural products are being favored by many countries," said Mr. Tung.

Sharing the same view, Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (Vinafruit), said that the reason for the strong growth of fruits and vegetables is thanks to increased purchases from China and the US. This is the first year after 3 years of the pandemic that items such as dragon fruit, durian, mango, and jackfruit are purchased the most by China.
"In the second half of the year, fruit and vegetable exports will be very positive if we grasp the requirements of the Chinese market in the direction of good manufacturing practices (GAP). It is expected that the total export turnover of fruits and vegetables this year could be over 4 billion USD. "The Vietnamese fruit and vegetable ship will accelerate this year and the following years," Mr. Nguyen predicted.
China is favoring Vietnamese agricultural products, but according to Mr. Nguyen Xuan Cuong, Director of the Department of Crop Production ( Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development ), this market is increasingly demanding. Therefore, he advised export enterprises to focus on developing modern processing technology, suitable for small and medium scale.
In addition, people also need to focus on planting trees according to the direction of local authorities, helping to concentrate planting areas, increase processing rates and meet the needs of product diversification.
