The unique values of Vietnamese traditional medicine became the focus of attention at the International Conference on Preclinical Development of Biopharmaceuticals (BioNCiD 2025) held on May 25 and 26 in Varadero, Cuba.
In the context of the international scientific community searching for sustainable healthcare solutions, the presentation by Associate Professor, Doctor, Physician Duong Trong Nghia, Deputy Director of the Central Hospital of Traditional Medicine, opened up new perspectives on the healthcare system combining traditional knowledge and modern medicine.
The presentation vividly depicted the Vietnamese traditional medicine system with a network of specialized hospitals spread across the country, along with a systematic training process for a team of talented physicians.
The achievements in the application of herbal medicine and traditional therapies to support cancer treatment at the Central Hospital of Traditional Medicine have received special attention from international delegates. The presentation on the immune mechanism of traditional medicine further highlights the potential for research cooperation between the two countries.
The conference, organized by the Cuban Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB), brought together experts, scientists and representatives of the global pharmaceutical industry.
The conference program focuses on preclinical drug and biopharmaceutical product development programs, advances in pharmacokinetics and toxicology, trends in drug-microbiome interaction assessment, updates to preclinical regulatory frameworks, and applications of in silico modeling methods in research.
In particular, the conference emphasized the 3R principle (Replace, Reduce, Refine) in research, along with standards on animal welfare and research ethics.
The conference is expected to create breakthroughs in preclinical research, contributing to accelerating the development of new, safer and more effective drugs for the community.
Established in 1986, CIGB is a pioneer in the field of biotechnology in Latin America with resounding successes in developing vaccines and many other biopharmaceutical products, typically the Heberbiovac HB vaccine against hepatitis B, the anti-cancer drug Heberferon, and recently, COVID-19 vaccines.

This event is not only a bridge to bring Vietnamese traditional medicine to the world , but also opens up promising prospects for cooperation between traditional medicine and Cuba's advanced biotechnology.
In the near future, traditional Vietnamese medicine can be systematically researched with the support of modern technology, creating high-quality health care products, combining the quintessence of both medical systems.
BioNCiD 2025 has truly become proof that Vietnamese traditional medicine can completely go hand in hand with modern medicine, contributing to bringing comprehensive health care solutions to the international community in the future./.
