After continuously holding the leading position as the messaging platform with the highest usage rate and popularity in 2024, Zalo continues to extend this streak in Decision Lab's latest Q1/2025 report.
In the category of “Messaging platforms”, Zalo leads with a penetration rate of 79%, continuing to maintain a gap with other global applications such as Facebook (69%), Messenger (54%), Viber (7%) or WhatsApp (6%). The results show that Vietnamese users prefer the “Made in Vietnam” messaging platform compared to famous international applications.

In Q1/2025, Zalo continued to consolidate its Top 1 position in terms of preference rate with 51%, surpassing Facebook (21%) and Messenger (20%). As in 2024, Zalo continued to be the most popular platform among all 3 user generation groups: Gen X, Gen Y and Gen Z. Specifically, the survey results of the Gen X group (those born between 1965 and 1980) confirmed that up to 63% of the surveyed people preferred to use Zalo for daily messaging. This figure for Messenger and Facebook was 16% and 15% respectively.
Similar to the two user generation groups Gen Y (those born between 1980 and 1995) and Gen Z (those born between 1995 and 2010), the rate of liking Zalo is 49% and 40% respectively. The survey results of these two user generation groups for Facebook are 25% and 23% respectively, and for Messenger recorded 18% and 27%. The large difference in liking rate shows the friendliness and usefulness of the domestic platform for domestic users.
This is the 18th consecutive quarter that Zalo has achieved the favorite platform ranking in all 3 user generation groups since 2020 - a milestone marking Zalo's transformation when it surpassed Facebook Messenger to become the number one messaging app in Vietnam.
Decision Lab's Q1/2025 report also recorded Zalo's growth in other categories such as Free Entertainment Content Browsing and News. Accordingly, Zalo recorded a positive increase in usage rate with 38% in the Free Entertainment Content Browsing category, showing its increasing role in promoting social connection and entertainment for users. For the News category, the rate of users using Zalo to read news increased dramatically to 27%, affirming its ability to provide useful news updates to users.
Notably, another product in Zalo's technology ecosystem, Zing MP3, also recorded strong growth when it became the Top 2 most popular online music streaming applications in Vietnam with a usage rate of 52% - just behind YouTube (76%) and a favorite rate of 21% - also behind YouTube (46%).
