The whole population actively participates in rabies prevention.
Specifically, a 49-year-old male patient, it is not clear whether he was bitten or licked by a dog or cat, but he showed symptoms of fatigue and difficulty drinking water on June 3, 2025 and was taken to a private clinic. Here, the patient was alert, had good communication, stated that he had not been bitten by a dog and had not been vaccinated. The doctor diagnosed a digestive disorder and gave him medicine to take at home (unknown type). On June 4, the patient had additional symptoms of fear of wind, fear of water, and could not drink, so he was taken to another general clinic, with a diagnosis of neurasthenia, anxiety disorder, and cachexia. The patient was then transferred to Binh Thuan General Hospital.
At the hospital, typical symptoms of suspected rabies were noted such as fear of water, fear of wind, shivering, and inability to drink water. The doctor diagnosed and monitored rabies; provided advice, explained the condition and prognosis to the family. The family asked to let the patient go home. The patient died on June 5, 2025.
Through investigation, the family did not record anyone being bitten by a dog or cat. The patient’s family and surrounding households do not keep dogs or cats. It is also not yet determined whether the patient was bitten, scratched, or licked by a dog or cat.
The provincial Center for Disease Control reported the outbreak to the provincial Department of Crop Production and Livestock for coordination in investigation and monitoring. Advise and guide people who have been in contact with patients or bitten by dogs to get rabies vaccination; organize disinfection and sterilization at home according to regulations. At the same time, strengthen communication and advise people in Phan Ri Cua town about vaccination when bitten by animals for timely preventive treatment.
