10 workers hospitalized due to suspected food poisoning

About 4 to 5 hours after lunch, 10 workers of HUALDA Thai Binh Garment Company Ltd., Phuc Khanh Industrial Park, Thai Binh City, showed symptoms of headache, nausea, fever, diarrhea... suspected of food poisoning and had to be hospitalized.

The inspection team of the Food Safety and Hygiene Department worked with HUALDA Thai Binh Garment Company Limited to clarify the cause of the incident.

Many symptoms of suspected food poisoning appear

Present at the Internal Medicine Department, Lam Hoa General Hospital on the afternoon of May 26, through contact with Ms. Vuong Thi Nhan, Duy Nhat commune (Vu Thu) treated in room 306 of the Hospital, she said: At around 12 o'clock on May 25, she and some workers had lunch at the Company's kitchen with dishes: rice, squash soup, fried shrimp, fried eggs, stir-fried vegetables. After about 5 hours, after work, she returned home with symptoms of headache, nausea, dizziness, diarrhea..., her family took her to the hospital at 22:45 on the same day. After nearly 1 day of intensive treatment at the Hospital, her health has gradually stabilized.

Workers of HUALDA Thai Binh Garment Company Limited were treated at the Internal Medicine Department, Lam Hoa General Hospital when they had symptoms suspected of being caused by food poisoning.

In room 308, Ms. Hoang Thi Huong, Thanh Tan commune (Kien Xuong) is now in stable health, but recalling the incident she is still scared. Ms. Huong said: After work, on the way home, I felt dizzy and nauseous. After walking about 4km to Ngo Thi Nham street, I and my motorbike wobbled and almost fell, then people helped me to the side of the road. After being taken to Lam Hoa General Hospital by relatives, she was treated actively by doctors and now she is less tired and her health is gradually stabilizing again. Along with Ms. Nhan and Ms. Huong, in rooms 210, 305, 308, there are 6 workers in the departments: plastic injection, sewing, packaging... also being treated at the Internal Medicine Department of Lam Hoa General Hospital and 2 workers being treated at the Provincial General Hospital, all with similar symptoms of headache, nausea and diarrhea.

Doctor Tran Van Trac, Department of Internal Medicine, Lam Hoa General Hospital, who directly received the patients, said: At around 4:00 p.m. on May 25, we received a number of patients from HUALDA Thai Binh Garment Company Ltd. with symptoms of headache, nausea and fever. After 2 hours of receiving and actively treating, some patients had diarrhea. Currently, the health of the patients has stabilized, and 6 patients have requested to be discharged from the hospital. For the patients under treatment, depending on their health, we will discharge them in the next few days.

Many violations in food sample storage process

Immediately after receiving the information, on the afternoon of May 26, the inspection team of the Food Safety and Hygiene Department had a meeting with HUALDA Thai Binh Garment Company Limited. At the meeting, Mr. Lam Chanh Dong, Administrative Director of HUALDA Thai Binh Garment Company Limited confirmed: At about 12:30 on May 25, the Company received 1,017 meals provided by Sao Hom Catering and Service Company Limited, Group 32, Tran Hung Dao Ward, Thai Binh City with dishes including: rice, squash soup, fried shrimp, fried eggs, stir-fried vegetables. On the evening of May 25, 2 workers had symptoms of abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea... suspected of food poisoning. By noon on May 26, 10 workers asked to take a leave of absence and 19 workers asked to go to the medical room for examination due to suspected food poisoning. After taking medicine, 19 workers returned to work.

During the working process, the inspection team of the Food Safety and Hygiene Department inspected the dining area and food sample storage, discovering a number of violations in the food sample storage process.

Mr. Nguyen Van Gioi, Deputy Head of the Food Safety and Hygiene Department, Head of the inspection team, affirmed: The food sample storage process of HUALDA Thai Binh Garment Company Limited is against regulations. According to regulations, each dish must be stored in a separate sample and sealed, but the dishes from the supplier are all put in one tray, without a seal stamped between the lid and the body of the box. Not to mention, the sample storage log is not updated regularly.

The food sample storage process of HUALDA Thai Binh Garment Company Limited violated regulations when all food was stored in the same tray and there was no inspection sticker between the lid and the body of the box.

At the meeting, the Company representative admitted the mistake of not checking and closely monitoring the storage of food samples. The Company sent staff and union organizations to hospitals to visit and encourage workers, and coordinated with the authorities to investigate and clarify the cause of the incident.

Immediately after the incident, on the morning of May 26, HUALDA Thai Binh Garment Company Limited stopped using meals provided by Sao Hom Catering and Service Company Limited to investigate the cause.

Officers of the Environmental Crime Prevention Police Department, Provincial Police, talked with some patients of HUALDA Thai Binh Garment Company Ltd. who are being treated at Lam Hoa General Hospital.

On the morning of May 27, the Food Safety and Hygiene Department continued to have a working session with Sao Hom Catering and Service Company Limited to inspect the food processing and preservation process, collect documents and evidence to serve the investigation.
