With nearly 4,000 visitors, the Pacific island nation of Tuvalu is the least visited country in the world.
World Population Review, an independent US-based organization on population and demographic surveys, has just announced a list of the 10 least visited countries in 2023. The ranking is based on data provided by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNTWO) in 2019 because data from subsequent years are inaccurate due to the impact of the pandemic.

With 3,700 visitors, Tuvalu, a remote Pacific island nation of 12,000 people, is the world's least visited destination. However, the UNWTO still rates this as "positive" and "rapidly growing" since it had just 1,100 visitors in 2012. Tourism in Tuvalu is largely focused on palm-fringed beaches and water sports such as snorkeling and diving to see coral reefs and sea turtles; yachting, motorbike tours and visits to local bakeries, the national library and some World War II ruins.
The island has an airport but flights don’t arrive or depart every day. Tuvalu is one of 22 Pacific island nations most vulnerable to climate change. Tuvaluan children are taught in school that they may be the last generation to grow up on the island before it is submerged by the ocean due to rising sea levels.
The remaining destinations in the top 10 include: Marshall Islands (6,100 visitors), Niue (10,200), Kiribati (12,000), Micronesia (18,000), Montserrat (British Overseas Territory - 19,300), Solomon Islands (29,000), Sao Tome & Principe (34,900), Comoros (45,000), Guinea-Bissau (52,000).
According to tourism experts, there are many reasons why the 10 places listed above are among the least visited in the world, such as: low popularity, remote location, high cost, and lack of attractive attractions despite being easy to reach. In addition, some other places have limited infrastructure and services. Others have too small an area to accommodate large numbers of tourists or are considered dangerous due to political instability.
Countries with fewer visitors do not necessarily mean fewer experiences, unless they are at war or in political turmoil. Many destinations are rated as beautiful, less crowded, affordable and are suggestions for tourists' upcoming trips.
The 10 most visited destinations in the world include: France (over 90 million arrivals), Spain (83.7 million), the US (79.3 million), China (65.7 million), Italy (64.5 million), Türkiye (51.2 million), Mexico (45 million), Thailand (39.8 million), Germany (39.6 million), and the UK (39.4 million).
Thailand is the most visited city in the world with 22 million visitors. Paris is second with more than 17.4 million visitors.
