Old age sets a good example
The story of writing a petition to escape poverty by Mrs. Quyen Thi Duong, 85 years old, Dong Bang residential group, Tan Yen town; Mrs. Dang Thi Kinh, 85 years old, Soi Long village, Thai Hoa commune; Mrs. Nguyen Thi Tuyet, Cay Xoan village, Duc Ninh commune... has made many people admire. They have promoted the spirit of "old age, bright example" for their children and grandchildren to learn from.
Quyen Thi Duong's entire life was filled with hardship when her husband contracted leprosy and had to go to Thai Nguyen for treatment, leaving her with three young children and an elderly mother. The poverty combined with the alienation from the world caused her family to fall into a deadlock at times. Sadness piled on sadness, her youngest child became seriously ill and passed away; her husband also died at the leprosarium.
Mr. Duong lived a life full of effort, determined to raise his children to adulthood. He said that he had gone through many hardships and difficulties, but he was determined to be removed from the list of poor households to give way to those in more difficult circumstances. Every day, he still diligently grew vegetables and raised chickens, without needing the help of his children and grandchildren.
When she was young, Ms. Dang Thi Kinh (over 80 years old) from Soi Long village, Thai Hoa commune, raised her children alone while her husband went to fight against foreign invaders. She experienced many hardships and witnessed the country go through pain and loss. Therefore, Ms. Kinh was determined to be removed from the list of poor households. Ms. Kinh expressed: “With the State providing money for the elderly, having land to grow vegetables and raise chickens, how can one be poor? It is not right to say that with five children, there is no place to rely on. I have many places to rely on, but I have not had to rely on. I ask the committee to allow me to return my poor household book and ask to escape poverty.”
In Duc Ninh commune, two elderly people, Nguyen Thi Tuyet, village 20 and Mai Thi Da, village Cay Xoan, voluntarily wrote a petition to leave the poor household. They all had the same thought, in recent years, the State and local authorities have always cared about poor households, they have received a lot of support. Therefore, they wrote a petition to leave poverty so that other poor households can have the health to work, be cared for, develop their family economy , and enrich the village.
Ms. Tuyet said: “I am 83 years old, my limbs are still intact, I can still work, so I have to ask to escape poverty. Today's society still has many people who need to be taken care of. Although I am old, the older I get, the stronger my will is. Each person must have the mindset to calculate for their life, then they will be determined to rise up and escape poverty.”
It can be seen that the image of the elderly women in Ham Yen who always confidently smile and tell the story of defeating the "enemy of poverty" is a new energy transmitted to everyone about optimism, love of life and independence in life.
Determined to get rich
We went to Thong Nhat village 1, Yen Phu commune to visit the family of Dao Van Sung, Mong ethnic group, born in 1984, who boldly wrote a petition to escape poverty. Sung's family has been classified as a poor household since 2013 with 5 members. Over the years, the family has enjoyed all the ethnic policies and regimes of the Party and the State. However, with the thought that he and his wife and children are in good health, have fields and livestock, and must strive to develop the economy, eliminate hunger and reduce poverty, he discussed and agreed with his wife and children to voluntarily apply to leave the poor household.
No sooner said than done, in a village meeting, he boldly asked for his family to no longer enjoy the poor household policies. Although he knew that no longer being a poor household meant that his family would no longer receive support, health insurance costs would no longer be reduced, and children would no longer be exempted from school fees... but Mr. Sung and his family were not too worried about that anymore. Because in the application to escape poverty, Mr. Sung expressed his determination: "I wrote an application to leave the poor household so that I can try to escape poverty as I promised. If we rely on others, we will always be poor from generation to generation. We cannot rely on the policies of the Party and the State forever...".
Mr. Sung shared: “I was determined to learn to be a construction worker. After 3 months, I was proficient. Currently, I also follow the construction projects with my teammates, earning more than 200,000 VND/day. In addition, at home, my wife and I actively work on the hills, grow corn, raise chickens and pigs. Life is gradually stabilizing. He said, only when we are stable can we think about further things, so we have to ask to be removed from the poor household to have the determination to get rich.”
Also showing that determination, at the end of 2023, Mr. Tran Van Thien, Tan Hung village, Hung Duc commune wrote: “I wrote an application to leave the poor household to use it as motivation to rise up. For 3 consecutive years, my family has been a poor household, but I myself realized that it is impossible to keep waiting for preferential policies for the poor. I have to overcome difficulties and rise up myself…”.
Mr. Thien actively grows vegetables and raises chickens to sell for income. His wife has just applied for a job as an environmental worker, with a stable income. His upcoming plan is to borrow preferential loans to raise free-range chickens and buy a rice milling machine to serve his family and the villagers.
In recent years, the movement of voluntarily applying to be removed from the list of poor households has also spread in Ham Yen. From 2021 to now, Ham Yen district has had 10 households voluntarily writing applications to be removed from the list of poor households, bringing a breath of self-reliance and self-reliance to escape poverty in each family.
Mr. Ma Phuc Du, Vice Chairman of Ham Yen District People's Committee, affirmed that the special thing is that the number of households voluntarily applying to escape poverty are the elderly, or farmers in mountainous, remote and isolated communes. The households writing applications to escape poverty are not necessarily because they are well-off, but it proves that people have begun to have the awareness to strive to develop their family economy.
And those applications for poverty alleviation have “fueled” the spirit and will, greatly changing the awareness of many people. They are shining examples for poor households who still have a dependent mindset, have not made any effort to rise up, to look at, strive and “reflect” on themselves. Because to reduce poverty effectively and sustainably, no one else but the poor households themselves need to change their way of thinking, their way of doing, and strive to rise up.
