Reuters news agency reported that, according to a press release from the Australian Prime Minister's Office, the joint statement emphasized that the tension between Lebanon and Israel since October 8, 2023 is unacceptable, raising the risk of further escalation of violence in the region.

This reality does not benefit anyone, neither the Israeli people nor the Lebanese people.

The statement also stressed that it was time to seek a diplomatic solution to help people on both sides of the conflict return home safely. However, diplomacy cannot succeed in the context of this escalating conflict.

Therefore, 12 countries and regions called for an immediate 21-day ceasefire across the Lebanon-Israel border to create space for diplomacy.

“We call on all parties, including the Governments of Israel and Lebanon, to immediately accept a temporary ceasefire in line with UN Security Council Resolution 1701 during this time and create a real opportunity for a diplomatic solution,” the statement said.

The countries signing the joint statement expressed their readiness to fully support all diplomatic efforts to reach an agreement between Lebanon and Israel during this period, building on the efforts made over the past months, to completely end the crisis.

On the Lebanese side, Prime Minister Najib Mikati hopes to soon reach a ceasefire agreement to end the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah forces in the country to stabilize the situation and avoid the scenario of Israel sending troops into Lebanon.

Speaking at a special meeting on the sidelines of the ongoing UN General Assembly in New York, Mr. Mikati expressed his support for the joint French-American proposal to end the current conflict on Lebanese territory.

The leader also called on the UN Security Council to ensure Israel's withdrawal from Lebanese territory and to stop the violations that are being repeated every day.

Lebanese Prime Minister Mikati expressed hope that a related agreement would be reached soon, but also said that the key to implementing the agreement was whether Israel was committed to implementing international resolutions.
