On the afternoon of April 28th, the men's football tournament of the Ho Chi Minh City Sports Festival officially opened with the regional qualifying round 3. Thirteen teams will participate, competing at two stadiums, Chau Duc and Phu My, from April 28th to May 17th.
The 13 teams are in Group A: Tam Long, Nghia Thanh, Ba Ria; Group B: Tan Hai, Long Hai, Ngai Giao; Group C: Long Huong, Chau Duc, Phu My, Chau Pha; Group D: Binh Gia, Vung Tau, Tan Thanh.
There are three groups, A, B, and D, each with three teams. In the three-team groups, if the first match ends in a draw, the team with code number 2 will play the next match against the team with code number 3.
In the opening day's matches, Tam Long ward won 8-2 against Nghia Thanh ward, Tan Hai ward lost 2-9 to Long Hai ward, and Binh Gia ward was defeated 2-9 by Vung Tau ward.
The teams will compete in 4 groups, with the top 2 teams from each group advancing to the quarter-finals. The 4 winning teams from the quarter-finals will qualify for the men's football finals of the Games in May 2026.
Following the opening of the Zone 3 qualifiers, Zone 1 qualifiers will begin from May 4-5 to May 12. Zone 1 qualifiers feature 10 teams competing at two venues: the old District 8 stadium and the Dat Duc stadium (Go Vap). The teams are divided into 3 groups, with the top 3 teams from each group advancing to the finals.
The second regional qualifying round has the fewest registered teams, with only 3 teams: Dau Tieng, Thuan Giao, and Lai Thieu. These 3 teams will compete in a round-robin format at the Di An stadium from 8-5, with one team advancing to the final round.
The final round will feature 8 teams competing to find the champion of the football event at the 1st Ho Chi Minh City Sports Festival 2026.
