The most spectacular bridges on the planet in the following list of British newspapers have a combination of aesthetic features and ingenious feats of engineering.
Danyang-Kunshan Bridge, China
At over 164 km long, this is the longest bridge in the world . Opened in 2011, it took around 10,000 people to build the bridge in just 4 years and cost 8.5 billion US dollars. This incredible structure connects Shanghai with Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu province.
Millau Viaduct, France
Surpassing even the majestic Eiffel Tower in height, France's Millau Viaduct holds the title of the world's tallest viaduct. At 343m high, the bridge opened in 2004 and spans the Tarn Valley between Clermont-Ferrand and Béziers and Narbonne.
Ribblehead Viaduct, North Yorkshire, England
Comprising 24 stone arches and rising 32m above the moorland below, the Ribblehead Viaduct is one of the UK’s finest examples of Victorian engineering. Built between 1870 and 1874 as part of the picturesque Settle-Carlisle Railway, the bridge is located in the middle of the Three Peaks and on the border of Cumbria and Yorkshire.
Vasco da Gama Bridge, Portugal
At nearly 12 km long, the Vasco da Gama Bridge, which connects northern and southern Portugal, is the longest bridge in Europe. It opened in 1998 and is named after the Portuguese explorer who was the first European to reach India by sea in the 15th century. Crossing the Tagus River, passengers cannot walk across the bridge and it was built to withstand winds of up to 249 km/h.
Panjiang Beihang Bridge, China
At over 560m high, the Beipanjiang Bridge, or Duge, is the world's tallest bridge. This vital stretch of highway links the cities of Liupanshui and Qujing, cutting travel times by up to three hours. Almost twice as tall as London's Shard, the bridge cost an estimated £112 million to build.
Pont du Gard aqueduct, France
Claiming the title of the oldest bridge on this list, the Pont du Gard aqueduct is a Roman monument built in the first century AD. Originally designed to supply water to the city of Nîmes, the three-tiered aqueduct stands 50m high. Constructed from soft, yellow limestone, the remarkable structure was declared a historic monument by the French government in 1840.
Golden Gate Bridge, USA
The world's most famous bridge, San Francisco's iconic landmark, opened in 1937 (just six months after the city's other major bridge, the Oakland Bay Bridge) at a cost of $35 million at the time. Eshima Ohashi, Japan

Just over a mile long, the Eshima Ohashi Bridge, which connects Matsue and Sakaiminato, is the largest rigid-frame bridge in Japan.
Canakkale Bridge 1915, Türkiye

Rod El Farag Bridge Crane, Egypt

NGUYEN MINH TU
Since opening in 2018, Vietnam’s Golden Bridge has become a major tourist attraction. Located on a mountaintop near the city of Da Nang, the unusual bridge is designed to look as if it is being supported by a pair of giant hands.
