Statistics on stock trading in the opening session of spring over the past 23 years show that VNIndex had 15 increasing sessions and 8 decreasing sessions.
In the first trading session after the Lunar New Year (the opening session), statistics show that VNIndex (the stock market index on the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange - Hose) had 15 increasing sessions and 8 decreasing sessions. The deepest decrease in the 23-year history of the stock market was in 2020 with a decrease of 3.22%. This is the year the stock market was severely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
In 2021, VNIndex had a bright start in the first session of Spring and helped the Vietnamese stock market record a year with many records set. In the following consecutive years, the stock market witnessed an increase in points on the first trading session of Spring. The VNIndex in 2021 increased by 3.66% in the first session of the Lunar New Year.
VNIndex statistics in the first trading session after Tet holiday from 2001 to 2023.
If we calculate the 5 sessions before and after the Lunar New Year holiday in the past 23 years, the rate of increasing sessions is higher than the rate of decreasing sessions. The 5 trading sessions before the Lunar New Year holiday in the past 23 years show that there were only 6 decreasing sessions and 17 increasing sessions. Thus, the figures in the past show that the Vietnamese stock market is often quite excited before closing for "Tet". Most of the increases are recorded at over 2%. Even in 2008, VNIndex broke out strongly with an increase of approximately 11% in just 5 sessions; in 2001, it also recorded an increase of nearly 9%.
More recently, in the last 6 consecutive years, there have been 5 years when the main index of the Vietnamese stock market has improved in the week before Tet. In 2019 alone, the VNIndex was almost flat with a decrease of only 0.02%. Most recently, in 2023, the VNIndex also increased by 4.52% in 5 sessions before Tet.
VNIndex statistics in the last 5 trading sessions and the first 5 trading sessions of the Lunar New Year holiday from 2001 to 2023.
Statistics of 23 years of 5 trading sessions after Tet show that the number of sessions with decreasing points is 9 sessions with decreasing points and 14 sessions with increasing points. Considering the stock market after Tet in recent years, VNIndex has had a series of 5 consecutive years (from 2015 to 2019) with increasing points in the first week of the new year. However, this impressive increasing series was interrupted in 2020 by the rapid spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
In 2021, when many other investment channels became less attractive due to the impact of the pandemic, along with the explosion of cash flow from domestic individual investors, the stock market witnessed strong increases. In the first 5 sessions of spring 2021 alone, VNIndex increased by 5.62%. By 2023, the market saw information about a number of individuals and organizations being arrested for violations in the securities and stock market sectors, combined with the impact of a difficult economy, causing VNIndex to decline.
However, statistics show that in the 5 trading sessions right after Tet holiday, the average increase of 0.97% is not too attractive.
Although statistics are for reference only, the positive figures recorded in the past have helped investors gain more confidence, especially being able to take advantage of this valuable time to maintain their strategy, keep stocks with expected growth potential, and even buy potential stocks.
