By 12 noon on September 12, Dong Xoai City had recorded 38/41 schools with 554 classes and 2,450 students with pink eye. Of which, the number of primary school students with the disease accounted for more than 70%.
Notably, schools with many students suffering from pink eye include: Tan Phu Primary School with 339 students; Tan Phu B Primary School with 220 students; Tan Xuan B Primary School with 274 students.
Speaking to Thanh Nien reporter, Ms. Vu Thi Luong, Principal of Tan Xuan B Primary School, said that since the beginning of the school year, the school has recorded 274 students with pink eye. On September 12, 173 students were absent from school due to pink eye. The rest have recovered and are back to school as usual.
Many classes are empty because students have pink eye and are staying home.
"Immediately after the first cases of pink eye were reported, the school coordinated with Tan Xuan Ward Medical Station and Dong Xoai City Medical Center to disinfect and clean classrooms; proactively administer saline and eye drops to all students in the school; and send notices to Zalo groups of classes to parents to proactively let their children temporarily stay home from school if they show signs of pink eye. At school, if students show signs of pink eye, teachers proactively notify parents to pick them up to avoid spreading the disease to other students in the school and class," Ms. Luong added.
Notably, not only students but also many parents now have pink eye due to infection from their children.
When children show signs of pink eye, the school medical staff will notify parents to pick up their children.
Faced with the fact that the number of cases of pink eye is increasing rapidly and there is a risk of a large outbreak in schools and the community, on September 11, the People's Committee of Dong Xoai City issued a document directing and requesting the Health Center to proactively strengthen the monitoring, detection and early treatment of cases in the community; to plan and purchase enough medicine, chemicals and medical supplies to prevent and control the epidemic.
The Department of Education and Training of Dong Xoai City directed schools in the area to proactively detect cases early and promptly isolate them when they are sick; wear masks, wash hands with soap regularly under clean running water; do not rub your eyes, nose, or mouth; do not share personal items such as eye drops, towels, glasses, masks, etc.
Students are reminded to wash their hands with soap under clean running water.
Dr. Ngo Quang Duong, Head of the Disease Control Department of Dong Xoai City Medical Center, said: "In the face of the situation of pink eye in the area, the Medical Center and the health stations of communes and wards have inspected and verified at schools to grasp and assess the situation. At the same time, they have directed and guided schools to immediately implement preventive measures. In the immediate future, we will provide materials for schools to disinfect and sterilize; at the same time, closely monitor the disease's developments, promptly advise on effective preventive measures, control the spread of the disease and prevent it from becoming an epidemic."
