On August 9, Dr. Nguyen Thanh Do, Department of Intensive Care - Anti-Poison, Lang Son General Hospital said that the hospital had just received 4 people with hemolytic poisoning after eating colored sticky rice made from plants.
Of these, two severe cases were mother and son, the patients had symptoms of yellow eyes, yellow skin, and dark red urine. The 24-year-old son had multiple organ failure, rapid respiratory failure, and severe drop in blood oxygen levels, and was diagnosed by doctors with hemolysis due to food poisoning.
The origin of the plant that the family picked and ate to make sticky rice has not been determined. (Illustration photo).
According to Dr. Do, the origin of the grass the family picked is currently unknown, and it is not clear which type caused the poisoning. The other two people in the family ate a small amount, were mildly poisoned, and are being monitored at home. They said they picked the grass in the wild, boiled it in water to get the purple color, and soaked it with sticky rice to make sticky rice.
The two patients were treated by doctors to ensure circulation, respiration, oxygen support, blood transfusions, and anti-inflammatory drugs. After 5 days of treatment, their health stabilized, and test results returned to normal.
Dr. Do said hemolysis is the destruction of red blood cells, which carry oxygen from the lungs to tissues throughout the body and carry CO2 from the tissues back to the lungs to be exhaled.
There are many causes of hemolysis such as immune system defects, autoimmune diseases, drugs, food poisoning or chemicals. Early and accurate detection of hemolysis helps the treatment process to be effective, avoiding brain and internal hemorrhage, which is life-threatening.
Common symptoms of patients with hemolytic anemia due to poisoning are jaundice. (Photo provided by the hospital).
Doctors recommend that people should not use plants of unknown origin or artificial chemical additives in food. People should only use natural ingredients from plants that are known to be safe such as gac, tomatoes, and turmeric to process food, and should not eat foods of unknown origin or with bright colors.
