40 'huge' gold mines have just been discovered, Lao Cai alone has nearly half a ton

TPO - Among the newly discovered metal mineral mines in the Northwest, there are up to 40 gold mines with reserves of nearly 30 tons. At a copper mine in Lao Cai province, research units discovered accompanying minerals with gold with a total resource of level 333, identifying more than 420 kg of gold.

According to the results just announced by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment , after 8 years of implementing the Project on comprehensive mineral survey and completion of the 1:50,000 scale geological map of the Northwest region to serve the planning of sustainable socio-economic development (Northwest Project), a geological - mineral map of over 13,381 km has been completed, covering the Northwest region.

The outstanding result of this project is the discovery of 110 mineral deposits of 25 important and precious minerals.

Mr. Tran Binh Trong - Director of the Department of Geology and Minerals - affirmed that the Northwest Project has completed the entire assigned volume, even exceeding 200% of the approved target. The Northwest Project is one of the largest basic geological survey projects in the country, with a large scale, diverse subjects, and long implementation time.

During the implementation process, the units implementing the Project have created a 1:50,000 scale mineral geological map on 13,081 km²; conducted 498 boreholes with a total depth of more than 46,000m, of which 90% of the boreholes encountered ore bodies - a very high rate.

An important achievement of the Project is the discovery and evaluation of 110 mineral mines, including 25 different types such as rare earth, tin-tungsten, gold, copper, antimony, decorative stone, industrial limestone... Of which, there are 17 large-scale mines, 43 medium-sized mines and 50 small mines - double the original target.

Notably, among the metal mineral mines, there are up to 40 gold mines with a total level 333 resource identified as more than 29.8 tons of gold. There are 5 copper mines with a total level 333 resource identified as more than 13,000 tons of copper metal. In addition, at a copper mine in Lao Cai province, research units also discovered accompanying minerals with gold with a total level 333 resource identified as more than 420 kg of gold.

Mr. Tran Binh Trong said: "Of the 110 newly discovered mineral mines, 62 potential mineral areas have been transferred to be integrated into the National Mineral Exploration Plan for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050."

The results achieved not only provide valuable scientific data but also serve as a foundation to promote investment and sustainable development in the Northwest region - a strategic region of the country. With the recorded achievements, the Northwest Project promises to continue to make positive contributions to the socio -economic development of the whole country in the future.

In the coming time, the Vietnam Geology and Minerals sector will continue to provide technical support and transfer data to help localities effectively exploit resources; continue to conduct in-depth investigations into hidden mineral areas and supplement investigations according to the Ministry's direction; support the improvement of management capacity and training of local officials in using the handed-over geological and mineral databases.

The Northwest Project is a project to comprehensively investigate mineral potential and geological resources, and to complete the geological and mineral map at a scale of 1:50,000 in the Northwest region to serve sustainable socio-economic development.

The Northwest Project is divided into groups of component projects including: Group of mineral geological mapping at scale 1:50,000; group of mineral investigation and assessment projects; group of other projects and synthesis tasks with a total of 26 component projects.

The scope of implementation of the Northwest Project includes the entire Northwest region with an area of 109,250 km2, including 12 provinces (Ha Giang, Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Son La, Hoa Binh, Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Lang Son, Phu Tho, Tuyen Quang) and 21 western districts of Thanh Hoa and Nghe An provinces.

According to Mr. Tran Quy Kien - Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment - the Northwest Project is of great significance, contributing to providing a scientific and practical basis for the exploitation and rational use of mineral resources and serving the goal of sustainable development in the Northwest region.
