5 indoor plants predicted to be popular this year

There are countless types of plants for you to choose from to decorate your space. However, do not forget to update the new and popular varieties on the market. But the most important thing is that you always need to choose indoor plants that are suitable for the growing conditions in your home space.

If the South American pothos and Singaporean Ficus have been the "stars" in the houseplant market for the past two years, this year, many new varieties are predicted by Justin Hancock, a gardening expert from Costa Farms, to become popular and be found in most households.

Here are five crops experts predict will be "hot" this year.

Chameleon ZZ Money Tree

ZZ plants are classic and low maintenance. In recent years, many new and exciting ZZ varieties have been introduced, including Raven ZZ and Variegated ZZ.

Hancock predicts 2023 will be the year of the Chameleon ZZ. “It is as easy to grow as Raven, Zamicro and other varieties. The young leaves of Chameleon ZZ do not have chlorophyll, so they are bright yellow. As they mature, the leaves gradually turn green and eventually dark green, similar to the leaves of other plants of the same species,” Hancock says.

This variety of money tree is currently attracting the attention of many plant lovers. With its trendy yellow leaves and low maintenance requirements, Chameleon ZZ is predicted to continue to be popular as more people, beyond just bonsai enthusiasts, learn about it.

Lemon Meringue

Pothos is certainly still one of the most popular houseplants due to its ease of care, and especially because new varieties are constantly being discovered.

This year, Hancock predicts that the Lemon Meringue variety will gain a lot of attention and affection from homeowners.

“This is a new variety being promoted by Costa Farms, and it is also one of the most sought-after plants in the company's online plant store,” he said.

Lemon Meringue features bright green foliage with a hint of yellow. They look more vibrant in bright light. With their beautiful heart-shaped leaves, Lemon Meringue makes an attractive addition to any home.

The Lemon Meringue variety, in particular, is super versatile. “You can hang it on a wall, put it on a tabletop, or let it climb a pole,” says Hancock.

White Knight Philodendron

White Knight - This gorgeous variegated Philodendron is not new to the houseplant world , but has recently become much more popular, and more affordable too.

One of the most sought-after plants today, with its white variegated leaves, deep red stems, and large leaf shape, this rare plant is one of the must-have houseplants for 2023.

However, the Philodendron White Knight is extremely difficult to grow. "It's a well-known and loved variety, but it's relatively difficult to get hold of. A few tissue culture labs do offer and sell it, and it's predicted to be a big seller this year," Hancock said.

White Knight Philodendron has large, variegated leaves with irregular bright white streaks.

“White and silver plants continue to be on trend, as do climbing plants. They don’t require much water or maintenance, so it’s no surprise that they’re popular this year,” he added.

Carnation

Hancock predicts that cyclamen varieties will get more attention this year.

Cyclamen is an attractive climbing plant known for its thick, waxy leaves (hence the name "wax plant") and showy flowers.

This houseplant has been around for many years in the collections of plant lovers, but has only recently begun to attract attention.

"Cacti have colorful foliage (tricolor lacunosa), fragrant flowers (Hoya lacunosa) or interesting shapes (cacti orchid). Everyone wants to own a complete collection of these plants," says Hancock.

Additionally, hydrangeas are low maintenance. So if you like the look of these plants and especially their longevity without much maintenance, don’t hesitate to pick one up at your local nursery or plant store.
