Speaking at a US Global Leadership Alliance forum in Washington DC via video link from Beijing, Ambassador Burns said five US companies had been targeted by the Chinese government in recent months - including Micron, Deloitte and consulting firms Bain & Company, Capvision and Mintz Group.

“Similar actions do not happen to other countries’ companies, but they happen to us. The issue is political in nature. It looks like retaliation from China’s perspective and it is wrong. We will retaliate,” he stressed.

In recent months, several US companies have faced increased scrutiny in China.

Business groups have warned about Beijing's increased use of exit bans, pressure on foreign appraisal firms and vague wording in China's new counter-espionage law.
