Pouring leftover food directly into the sink may be convenient in the short term, but in the long term it will clog or damage the pipes. The health section of the American MSN website has summarized some things that should not be poured down the sink below.

1. Rice

After being soaked in water, rice will swell and stick together, forming clumps that clog pipes. After drying, it is also very difficult to clean.

2. Coffee grounds

Coffee grounds contain substances that are insoluble in water, have high viscosity, easily stick to other substances in the drain and are difficult to dissolve in water. Pouring coffee grounds down the drain will cause this substance to accumulate, stick to other objects in the pipe, leading to poor flow and clogged drains.

3. Eggshell

Broken eggshells are hard to pick up, so many people have the habit of flushing them down the sink. Eggshells may seem fragile, but they can wreak havoc on plumbing.

Wet eggshells that stick to pipes after drying will be very difficult to remove. Over time, they will form a lump that blocks the flow of water, leading to clogged drains. What you should do is throw the eggshells in the trash.

4. Noodles

Starchy foods can swell up when exposed to water multiple times, causing a blockage. You can try pouring hot water, or a mixture of vinegar and baking soda down the drain to help unclog a noodle-caused clog. The best way to avoid this is to not pour noodles down the sink.

5. Grease

Oil left in the pan after cooking will solidify at room temperature. Poured down the drain, it will harden, sticking to the inside of the pipe. Oil sticks to the drain pipe, over time causing blockage and an unpleasant odor.

6. Expired medicine

Expired medicines should be packaged and disposed of according to the procedure. You should not pour them down the drain. The compounds in expired medicines are likely to affect the environment. Especially in places without wastewater treatment systems, if you pour them down the drain, these compounds will seep into the water, affecting the water source.

7. Bleach

Pouring bleach down the drain can create dangerous chloramine gas. The fumes from this gas are irritating to the body, leading to a host of more serious health problems.
