Instead of taking the win, DC's comic book adventure The Flash finished in third place at the North American box office this weekend, behind Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Pixar's Elemental . The blockbuster only slightly edged out Jennifer Lawrence's new comedy No Hard Feelings .
The Flash dropped a dismal 73% in its second weekend, dropping $15.3 million from 4,265 theaters in North America. That's a much bigger drop than recent DC adaptations like Black Adam (59%) and Shazam! Fury of the Gods (69%), which ended up being significant money losers.

The Flash is a “disastrous” outcome for a $200 million blockbuster, signaling that ticket sales will not increase during its theatrical run. The film has so far earned $87 million at the domestic box office and $123 million internationally, bringing its global total to $210 million, when it needs to earn at least $400 million to break even.
Part of the problem is that new DC Comics leaders James Gunn and Peter Safran have announced plans to reset the comic book universe, which is failing.
Unfortunately for the two remaining DC films in limbo, Blue Beetle (in theaters August 18) and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (December 20), starring Jason Momoa.
All in all, it was a wild weekend at the box office as Sony's Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse returned to the No. 1 spot (in its fourth week of release) with $19.3 million. It's rare for a movie to return to the top of the charts after multiple weeks of release, especially in the heat of the summer movie season. To date, the animated Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has grossed $316 million domestically and a total of $560 million worldwide against a production budget of just $100 million.
Disney and Pixar's animated film Elemental took second place with $18.5 million, bringing its domestic total to $65 million and its global total to $121 million. Ticket sales in its second weekend were better than expected, down just 37% from last weekend.
Jennifer Lawrence (as Maddie Barker) in the movie No Hard Feelings
Jennifer Lawrence-starring comedy No Hard Feelings opened in fourth place with $15 million from 3,208 theaters. That's not a bad showing for a comedy, but analysts expected more from Sony's $45 million film starring one of the biggest names in Hollywood: Jennifer Lawrence.
Directed by Gene Stupnitsky, No Hard Feelings grossed $9.5 million from 48 international markets, a promising showing given that comedies tend to have limited appeal overseas.
No Hard Feelings stars Jennifer Lawrence as a down-on-her-luck Uber driver who accepts a Craigslist ad to "date" an introverted 19-year-old (Andrew Barth Feldman) before he heads off to college. Most audiences liked the film, giving it a "B+" CinemaScore.
" No Hard Feelings is not to be underestimated when it makes $45 million. That's a big number at the box office level," said David A. Gross, who runs the film consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research.
Rounding out the top five, Paramount’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts grossed $11.6 million from 3,523 theaters, down 44% in its third weekend. To date, the seventh installment of the Transformers franchise has earned $123 million domestically and $218 million internationally, bringing its total to $341 million against a $200 million production budget.
Wes Anderson's Asteroid City opened to $9 million in 1,675 theaters over the weekend. That's the high point of Anderson's career, which includes directing beloved arthouse fare like The Royal Tenenbaums and The Grand Budapest Hotel . By comparison, his last film, 2021's The French Dispatch, opened to just $2.5 million in the same number of theaters.
Asteroid City is set in the 1950s, starring Scarlett Johansson, Jason Schwartzman, Maya Hawke, Bryan Cranston...
The Flash , directed by Andy Muschietti, features a "huge" cast: Ezra Miller, Michael Keaton, Ben Affleck, Sasha Calle... and is the 13th installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).
