AI has yet to capture a fraction of the human experience

ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, is based on a large language model (LLM). That means it is trained on a huge amount of language data, allowing users to provide prompts with requests and questions for the chatbot to answer in a language that humans understand.

The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) has raised concerns among technology experts, who say that if left unchecked, it will threaten society. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has called AI “one of the biggest threats to the future of civilization.”

At the recent Viva Tech conference, Jacques Attali – a French sociologist and economist – expressed his opinion: AI is good or bad depending on how it is used. For example, using AI to develop more fossil fuels or dangerous weapons is terrible. On the contrary, AI has an effect on health, education and culture.

Mr. Yann LeCunn, Director of AI at Meta

Also at the event, Yann LeCunn, Director of AI at Meta – Facebook’s parent company – assessed that generative AI is not yet intelligent because it is only trained in language. According to Mr. LeCunn, they still have many limitations and do not understand the basic realities of real life. “Most knowledge is not related to language… so AI does not capture part of the human experience,” he shared.

He also added that the AI system can pass the test to become a lawyer in the US but cannot put dishes in the dishwasher, something a 10-year-old child can learn in 10 minutes. He commented that even the intelligence of dogs cannot be achieved by AI.

Speaking of the limitations of AI, he gave another example. That is, a 5-month-old baby just looks at a floating object without thinking, but a 9-month-old baby will look at it and be surprised. We still “don’t know how to replicate this ability in machines.” Until we do that, AI will not be as intelligent as dogs, cats or humans.

Will robots take over humans?

Attali has a pessimistic view of the future, saying that humans will face many dangers in the next 3 or 4 decades. Natural disasters and war are his top two concerns, in addition to “robots that could turn against us.”

According to Mr. LeCunn, in the future, there will be machines that are smarter than humans, but this should not be seen as a threat but as a benefit. Each person will have an AI assistant, like a daily life assistant, that is smarter than themselves.

However, the scientist noted that AI systems need to be created to be controllable and fundamentally dependent on humans. He also dismissed the idea that robots will take over the world. “There is no connection between intelligence and the desire to take over,” he said.

Looking at the benefits and risks of AI, Attali concluded that there needs to be “guardrails” in place to keep the technology from going off track. But he wasn’t sure who would do it.

AI governance is a hot topic at Viva Tech. The European Union is leading the way with its own AI draft, while top French officials want global regulation of the technology.

(According to CNBC)

AI technology helps Microsoft reach a record capitalization of 2.6 trillion USD . Optimism about the artificial intelligence (AI) market pushed Microsoft's stock price to a record high in the trading session on June 15, bringing the total market capitalization of the software giant to 2.59 trillion USD.
