He posted on social media that while he was happy to see the online community constantly creating with Ghibli-style art, the surge in image creation requests was threatening to 'melt the GPUs' at data centers – a metaphorical way of saying servers are operating at full capacity and potentially overheating.

In response, OpenAI announced it would temporarily limit image generation speeds while engineers fine-tune the system to optimize efficiency. The company also acknowledged that ChatGPT might reject some image generation requests during this period and stated it is working to resolve the issue.

This move comes just one day after users of the free version of ChatGPT had their ability to create images using GPT-4o completely suspended due to overwhelming demand. Altman stated that while paid users are currently facing speed limits, free users will soon have access restored, albeit limited to a maximum of three images per day. However, a specific timeline for this has not yet been announced.

Despite the restrictions, the online community seemed undeterred, continuing to "attack" Altman's post with a series of other Ghibli-style images, demonstrating the immense appeal of this trend.

The appeal of the Ghibli trend largely stems from the impressive capabilities of the GPT-4o. This model not only produces realistic images and handles text within images almost perfectly, but also excels at 'understanding' and recreating original images in various artistic styles. Its ability to interpret context and recreate with high accuracy in the signature Ghibli style makes the GPT-4o particularly popular for this trend, even though other AI tools can do the same.
