Parallel forces, indispensable

Recently, the press has continuously reported many shocking cases related to counterfeit goods, poor quality goods and commercial fraud.

Notable are a series of investigative articles on hundreds of types of fake milk and substandard milk aimed at sensitive groups such as people with diabetes, kidney failure, premature babies and pregnant women; dozens of drugs that have not been licensed for circulation; tens of thousands of liters of fake cooking oil and hundreds of tons of seasoning powder, salt, and monosodium glutamate that do not meet announced standards. Many images and videos recording scenes of smuggled candies and fake functional foods being dumped in landfills were also exposed.

The press also reflects the reality of some functional foods advertised as "miracle drugs" such as vegetable candy, weight loss tea... but when checked, these products do not have the declared content, do not meet safety standards, do not have a circulation license, and even contain banned substances.

In addition, elaborate investigative articles on the “path” of smuggled goods, as well as sophisticated tricks to turn counterfeit goods into high-end, “family heirloom” goods, were also widely published, contributing to raising awareness among consumers and the whole society.

The press did not wait until the peak campaign to crack down on counterfeit goods, fake goods, and commercial fraud was launched for it to “get involved”. In fact, this task has been carried out regularly and continuously by press agencies.

Along with specialized forces such as economic police, market management, border guards, customs, etc., the press also plays the role of "soldiers" on the front line against trade fraud through print, electronic, television, and radio. A series of cases related to counterfeit and fake goods are continuously reported in newspapers, television channels, and radio.

In addition, social media platforms of press agencies such as Facebook, Zalo, YouTube, TikTok... are also strongly exploited to spread information to the public, especially young people - the group that regularly uses social networks.

Through articles reflecting, investigating, warning and in-depth analysis, the press not only brings the truth to light but also helps authorities promptly grasp the situation, thereby having effective handling and prevention plans.

It can be affirmed that the fight against counterfeit goods, fake goods and trade fraud will hardly be effective without the support of the press.

Associate Professor Dr. Bui Chi Trung - Deputy Director of the Institute of Journalism and Communication Training (University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi) - commented: “The press has contributed the voices of insiders in many different aspects. The press has done well its role, which is to inform people about policies and laws; to monitor, criticize, investigate, and expose the truth of relevant outstanding issues, including investigating individuals in state management agencies who have violated the law. The press also participates in social organization work, as a "conduit" connecting different information directions between policies and public opinion, reflecting people's concerns and recommendations to leaders at all levels, and vice versa, requiring competent authorities to respond to public opinion and the people".

Promoting “citizen journalism” and the voice of businesses

In recent times, despite the efforts of ministries, sectors, localities and functional forces, smuggling, trade fraud, production and trading of counterfeit goods, counterfeit goods, and infringement of intellectual property rights are still complicated, occurring on a large scale, with many participants. This situation not only seriously affects people's health, but also undermines social trust, causing confusion and anxiety among the public.

Faced with that reality, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh issued Official Dispatch No. 72/CD-TTg dated May 24, 2025, requesting the synchronous participation of ministries, branches and localities. In particular, the dispatch clearly stated that press and media agencies need to "increase reporting on the dangers of smuggling, trade fraud, counterfeit goods, and intellectual property infringement; promptly commend positive examples and good practices of ministries, branches and localities; criticize and condemn negative and irresponsible acts that lead to consequences". This requirement is not only a task, but also an affirmation of the role of monitoring and social criticism of press agencies.

However, the fight against counterfeit goods, fake goods and commercial fraud cannot rely solely on the efforts of the press but requires coordination from many fields and professions, as well as the participation of the people.

Telegram No. 72 also emphasized the need to mobilize authorities, businesses and people to "actively and responsibly participate in the fight against smuggling, trade fraud and counterfeit goods to detect early, combat and prevent right from the grassroots, from the starting point".

In fact, there have been many shocking incidents that originated from “citizen sources”. Such as the Kera vegetable candy case discovered by the social network account Su Tu An Chay or the “dirty meat” story of the CP brand that is “causing a storm” about trust raised by the social network account Jonny Lieu. People have become “partners” of the press, even each citizen can become a “citizen journalist”. Social networks have helped the trend of “citizen journalism” develop.

The downside of “citizen journalism” is fake news and unverified, unauthenticated rumors. However, from a positive perspective, thanks to “citizen journalism”, news sources for press agencies become faster, more diverse, more multi-dimensional, and cover all “fronts”.

According to Associate Professor Dr. Bui Chi Trung, the development of new media has allowed people to access, record, and take photos in many places, at many times, and seize opportunities at every moment, so people can easily post information on social networks, participate in commenting and criticizing issues. People's voices create opportunities for the press to monitor, investigate, and reflect incidents arising from the grassroots. Therefore, to promote the role of citizen journalism, press agencies need to organize, lead, and create media trust so that people can accompany the press in speaking out and fighting against negativity in life.

To do this, “the communication method model needs to change into a model that changes awareness and behavior, so that people become proactive subjects who directly participate and link into an information network, a network of responsible people with interests who join the fight. At that time, the press only plays a companion and connecting role” - Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Chi Trung shared.

In the problem of counterfeit goods, fake goods, and commercial fraud, the “victims” are not only consumers but also legitimate businesses. The role of the press, therefore, is not only to detect and combat violations but also to promote “green businesses” that produce honestly, provide transparent information, and are socially responsible.

According to Editor-in-Chief of Culture Newspaper Nguyen Anh Vu, the press, as a special social institution, has the ability to lead public opinion, promote positive values, and has been closely accompanying the business community in many activities. The press reflects and spreads typical corporate culture models, inspires and encourages businesses that do business honestly and are responsible to society; criticizes and warns against wrongdoings and unethical business practices, thereby contributing to purifying the business environment.

In the era of strong social network development, the press - people - businesses need to become a triangle of companionship and creation, contributing to building a humane and modern business ecosystem. To do this, the team of journalists, from reporters, editors to heads of press agencies, all need to be brave, dare to think, dare to do, but also need to be very fair, careful, and maintain "a bright mind, sharp pen, pure heart".
